I Say Just Visit Where the Wild Things Are

Usually when a game comes out for a hit movie, I get a flawed 3D platformer, like Aliens in the Attic or Coraline.
But there’s something special about Where the Wild Things Are, the game.
First off, it can be a stand alone product. You are Max, and you have to go through 11 levels, collecting all sorts of things, and fight off bugs and black slime with your scepter. It doesn’t rely on the movie at all.
Between the levels, you go to the village where the Wild Things live, and you can explore it. And when you get a certain number of an item, you get to explore more of the village. This is a very nice touch to the game.
The combat system used is very simple. You can block, jump, and/or do a simple attack or hold down the attack button to do a more powerful attack (some bugs can only be beaten if you hit it with the powerful attack.) Okay, sometimes it can be just a button masher.
But this game has a story that’s much better than you usual movie based video game. The characters do come alive and a lot of personality is on display here.
Too bad the player is stuck with a stationery camera - the jumps late in the game get tough because it’s hard to determine which way to jump to land on the platform or on the pole. And some enemies can get off screen, too.
The game’s about five hours, which maybe short for some players, and it doesn’t revolutionize the 3D plat forming genre, but Where the Wild Things Are has good presentation, level designs, and story. RENT IT.
