decent game... a few bugs

For the sake of completeness, I wanted to give this game a 7, maybe 7.5 but than I encountered a few devastating bugs and then I wanted to give it a 3. On a few stages (in this case 4) the background music would cut out and the triggered events would not occur; meaning the stage could not be completed. I discovered that an interim save followed by a restart would buy me extra time to complete the stage. This issue was annoying enough to warrant some score deduction.

Bugs aside, if you have played the previous dynasty/samurai warrior games, then you know what this game is all about. If you hated the previous games...you won't like this one either.

There are improvements from the last version I played (5? or empires?). You have a 3 person team and the campaigns mix characters from the traditional kingdoms. There are lots of characters (~80) and abilities to unlock. Most characters have new attacks.

Sadly, some of the problems persist. Game environments are pretty empty. Many characters are not fun to use. Although most characters are easy to unlock (just successfully complete whatever plan is happening on the stage) some of the unlockables are pretty hard to get, as there are no hints. This applies mainly to the personal items. After finishing the entire game (all campaigns, 1000 gamer points) I only accidentally unlocked 2 items, and only obtained 1.

In summary, If you like this type of game, you will probably enjoy this one as well.

Weak

Good graphics, bizarre concept

While I look forward to better graphics in these next generation WARRIORS games, neither this nor DYNASTY WARRIORS 6 has gotten close to the pure joy i've gotten out of DYNASTY WARRIORS 5 and every previous version of the game (besides the original, obviously). This bizarro mash-up also includes a crazy alien race, which throws the whole point of the game out of whack, and everyone is excessively chatty. And the switching between three heros in the middle of battle makes it feel more like a Mario or Zelda game than a single--player hack n slash. Hopefully, these guys will get it right someday. Until then, I'll happily play my old used discs on my PS2.

Weak

hack-n-yawn

I only gave two hours to this game.
This was my first try at one of the games in the "Warriors" family. If this is the best of the bunch, it was also my last.

Graphically it looks good. I liked the character attacks, and wading through literally hundreds of enemies made me smile. Entertaining specials/finishing moves.
Being able to strike with a weapon while on horseback is a nice touch, but with that many enemies to all sides you won't stay on for long. There are so many characters from which to choose it feels like overkill. Probably could have some fun with the "combine-weapons" menu but I didn't care to get that deep...

Warriors: Orochi is fine if you want a little arcade hack-n-slash, or if you're babysitting an under-10 child. (Enemies don't technically die; they are "KO'ed".)
