IGN Review of Wacky World of Sports
It seems like every major publisher has to have its one game that wrangles up a group of waggle-based mini-games and feeds them one at a time to the user. For SEGA, that game is Wacky World of Sports, a title that packs a paltry ten strange mini-games into its $40 price tag. Despite the small number of activities to try out, you probably won't make it all the way through the list thanks to frustrating controls and sub-par game design.
The setup for Wacky World of Sports is very simple. You pick a tour location, of which there are less than a handful, choose a character and then you're off to try to beat three AI opponents. Either that, or you can setup your own circuit of mini-games and take part in multiplayer antics. The main problem with this structure is that only a few of the mini-games are any fun thanks to inherent design flaws and that list is curtailed further by the unresponsive controls.
The "wacky" in Wacky World of Sports pertains to the mini-games themselves. You'll take part in things like lawnmower racing, extreme ironing, log chopping and ice golf among others. The premise becomes acceptable once you see the off-the-wall characters and game world that you're playing in, but that doesn't help make them any more enjoyable. Things like missing the timing window in the rhythm-based ironing game and unresponsive boxing is very annoying despite being some of the more tolerable activities.
The real problem with Wacky World of Sports is that it's plain uninspired game development. There's no soul to any of the characters, no heart beat for the game design itself and, frankly, there's really no reason to revisit this game once you've discovered how dysfunctional it is. If they had added Wii MotionPlus support perhaps the mini-games would've performed with more accuracy, but as it stands they're just a mess.
It doesn't help that the game doesn't change it up at all when it comes to multiplayer. The last mini-game-centric game that I played, Baseball Blast!, was at least able to deliver a different gameplay experience when playing with others. Such is not the case with Wacky World of Sports. Instead you get the same mini-games and the same basic setup, only now you're making others suffer through the inaccurate zaniness.
Wacky World of Sports doesn't help itself with the visuals, either. While the characters are colorful and reasonably cute, the level of detail simply isn't there and the player models aren't very clean. You'll notice plenty of robotic movements and aliasing throughout gameplay. The environments are drab and fairly boring and the crowd animations are abysmal.
The sound in the game is even worse, if you can believe that. There's an annoying Mario-esque effect that plays with just about every button press and it gets old in a hurry. Likewise, the characters have no personality which only increases the detachment you'll feel when playing Wacky World of Sports.
