Valkyria Chronicles is a truly next gen title in every way.
The strategic game play consists of analyzing a skirmish from a map view, selecting a character and moving them across the battlefield while performing an action (attack, heal, repair), or issuing orders to improve your units stats or condition. These third person segments enhance the standard rock, paper, scissors combat and bring emotional attachment to you're individual troops. During these live action segments you can take damage from enemy fire providing for exhilarating pacing, but once you lock in on your target time stops, allowing you to intelligently set up your shots. This design choice keeps Valkyrie Chronicles in the realm of strategy RPG and not a frag fest. In between battles you will be kept busy managing your troops and unlocking and improving weapons and tanks
The plot is conveyed via a story book and centers around Welkin, Alicia and there squadron the 7's, depicting their colorful journey to free their home nation from the evil occupying empire against long odds in an alternate WWII universe. Each chapter of the book has cut scene story advancing segments as well as battles. additional chapters unlock as you complete them, and additional background chapters can be obtained as the game progresses.
Graphically Valkyria Chronicles is done in a vibrant watercolor style, a live painting might be the best description. The classic musical score and superb voice acting add to the immersion and connection with the characters during their epic struggle.
From the integration of several gaming styles to its beautiful watercolor graphics and animations to its exceptional soundtrack Valkyria Chronicles is a game that innovates and pushes the boundaries of what to expect from strategy games and gaming in general. If your a fan of Strategy RPG's, story driven game play or just unique and polished games I implore you to give this gem a try.
It's definitely one of the more recent games I've played that really makes you have to think about what your next moves are going to be.
While not ridiculously complicated in nature, you do need to realize the different classes and what each of them are capable of.
While the storyline put me to sleep after Chapter 1 (you can watch it if you really want to), I mainly just enjoy the skirmishes and battle system that has been provided. It's not a game for everybody, but if you enjoy turn based strategies you might want to consider this a game to be on your list.
