Shmups are one of my favorite genres, though over the past years I've grown more fond of the bullethell type and offerings from Cave in particular.
This is not one of those types, but more akin to Raiden. Though the patterns can get quite dense and hard to navigate, I just never found them fun to weave through when compared to the bullethell type games. It doesn't help that your helicopter moves somewhat slow for my taste with no speed adjustments available either.
The way you have to tap the button and shift control to alter the direction of your ship feels cumbersome most of the time, especially in heavy fire. Whereas in other shooters it feels easier to weave bullets while maintaining your shot, here it becomes a chore to manage both.
Also bothers me that when you die, the screen freeze for what feels like way too long. Hit box felt off a lot of times too.
Graphically it looks quite nice in HD and I like the new full screen mode it offers as well. Smoke, explosions and particle effects are beautiful and seems more focus was put into that than the rest of the game. Otherwise the rest of the game is pretty bland looking, just generic copters and tanks over and over. Bosses which are usually the saving grace of these games fail to be any fun at all. Level 2 has battleships mixed in the stage, and the final boss...another larger battleship.
When it comes to settings of shmups I like them all, military, space, anime it doesn't matter much. The only break in the repeated settings here just adds a layer of snow on the ground.
I hated having limited credits here, the motivation to earn more was not there. And upon losing a full credit you have to restart the level or a checkpoint, very annoying. More playtime increases credits, but I just couldn't do it to earn more than 2 extra.
The ship upgrades are almost non existent with one stale helicopter, forgettable music, just made me unhappy playing. Wanted to like it more, too bad Zero Gunner 2 wasn'
