For a hand held game the graphic are nothing short of amazing. Rich textures, fluid character motion and well placed lighting make Uncharted: Golden Abyss pleasant on the eyes. Unfortunately the characters just won't shut up. It's not that the acting is bad, but the writing is bland and boring. The characters poke fun at each other through out, but almost never fail to apologize for their chiding.
Phrases you'll be sick of by the end of the story line...
1. "Just kidding"
2. "I know, I know."
4. "That's what she said."
5. "Wait, I almost forgot."
It's as if this game was written by the programmers. Since the characters rarely have any conflict with each other the story feels flat and anticlimactic at the end.
That's not to say that the gameplay is bad. Far from it. Outside of a few camera issues and some frustrating touchscreen mechanics, moving Drake up and down and over giant chasms feel natural and smooth. The gun fighting is great once you turn on the auto aim. Drake takes shots at endless numbers of enemy from behind cover. Some of the AI can be a bit dense, and you may walk directly in front of a character with out them ever noticing you, but this only makes you feel like a ninja as you silently take out an entire gang of baddies.
Lastly the treasure hunting is fun, but not really worth the time to find every single artifact. There are just so many treasures to find it can seem daunting, and there isn't a great amount of satisfaction out of finding treasures because the benefits of finding every piece of lost treasure isn't very apparent.
Tight gameplay and pretty graphics just can't outweigh such bad writing. I found myself playing through the game as quickly as I could just to get it over with. If you are looking for quick new Uncharted romp through the Mayan forest, then this is your game, just don't expect any academy award winning storylines for your money.
