Ultimate Block Party offers a typical feel when it comes to puzzle gaming. Unfortunately, it seems to lack one thing that most puzzle games have... and that's longevity. Beating the game in the first hour of sitting down gives it that fast play for a portable, but also allows it to lack any sense of accomplishment. There’s nothing to unlock and the backgrounds all look pretty much the same. When one plays a puzzle game they tend to expect multiple levels varying in music, colors, and challenge. The computer really doesn’t put up too much of a struggle till you are on the final stage! As far as puzzle games go, there are other games with much more bang for your buck. Where Ultimate Block Party has the cute aspect and easy jump on/jump off capability, it lacks in mostly everything else. Too short for fun!
Honestly I can't say much for a game that has a theme that's been done so many times before and yet still neglects to provide any real variation. The only variation is in the characters which are not all that much different other than thier color and that doesn't score too many points in my book. I think this genre has hit a creative wall. If you are planning on buying this title, makes sure you buy it USED or RENT it so you don't feel like such a waste.
If you are a fan of puzzle games, I would suggest you check this out. The programming in my opinion is awesome, they borrow a little, and innovate alot. I also thought the graphics were pretty good, its a puzzler so you don't expect somethin impressive graphically, but whats there is amusing to the eyes. Controls are great, very responsive. The problem with this game is the campaign could've really borrowed some elements of Lumines and ramp the difficulty up gradually, instead of a game over screen after ten minutes of intense play. I bet the 2 player vs. is really addictive, but i don't know anybody with a psp.
