I never really wanted to know what would happen if Tony Hawk decided to turn into a snail – but that’s sort of what happens in the game Turbo Super Stunt Squad.
This game has six areas for you to explore. Each area is vast with lots of places for the snail to do flips, grinds, ollies, and other tricks.
But at the first play, only the first area is available for play. To unlock the rest, you have to do tasks like collect sets of icons like flags, letters or hot sauce packets. Another task you can do is make certain jumps throughout each level. After five or so successful tasks, the second area is unlocked. And after another five tasks are completed, the third area is unlocked. And it goes on until all six areas are unlocked
But here’s the catch. You only have three minutes per run, so you’ll end up going back to the same area over and over again.
Why do they do this? They want us to explore each area, but put huge time constraints to limit our exploration? This is just wrong.
There is an unlimited run to help you get familiarized with how the area is laid out, but you won’t know where the icons are you need to collect in the Timed Mode.
And the presentation of this game is extremely flat. All you get is messages on the screen when you complete a task or get a new shell for your snail. After about thirty minutes, this game felt more like a chore than fun. And after about two hours, I really got tired of this game.
There’s a multiplayer component to this where two players can compete against each other to see how many points they can score in three minutes – or play a game of HORSE but instead of shooting basketballs, players pull off stunts. First player who doesn’t follow up 5 successful stunts after the other player makes the stunt loses.
But even that is bland and boring due to the lackluster presentation.
Turbo Super Stunt Squad is just another unambitious movie tie in game I say you should avoid. SKIP IT.
It may seem like a bad juvenile game based on a cruddy movie. Like the movie, don't let it trick you like that. After seeing the movie on my birthday I had to play this game on Wii U and I'm glad I bought it. The stunt park style gameplay is very fun, and being that it's fast snails doesn't diminish it. If you saw the movie, you'd know how at least one of them got fast, and don't worry about logic because it's a cartoon meant for entertainment. While some objectives are nearly impossible to complete, it's just fun trying to get them completed and the gameplay is just so smoove. And on the HD systems, it's quite gorgeous to look at, even on an old Magnavox like what I've got. I recommend it, even for older gamers who prefer more mature games.
