For many, many years, the Transformers titles have been plagued by less than enjoyable game experiences. However, the Transformers franchise has received a repreve from flop games with the 2004 release of "Transformers" for the Playstation 2.
The game revolves around the discovery of a lost race of Transformers called... Mini-cons. In pursuit of the lost brethern, the Autobots put forth the choice of playing as either Optimus Prime, Red Alert or Hot Shot. Each of the three Autobots have stats of their own, ranging from attack, defense and speed, to a power rating. This power level restricts which Mini-cons you can have equipped at one time. This restriction on Mini-con power level causes the player to choose carefully which Mini-cons to use for any given situation.
The graphics are wonderful and really bring the Transformers to life. Gameplay is relatively easy to pick up and story progression, while somewhat forced (you can go back to previous levels to collect missed items), is easy to follow with the occasional update and mission objectives sent from Autobot Headquarters.
New and old fans of the Transformers cartoon series will be very pleased with the quality of work put forth from the people at Atari.
