This game does something that the past two Transformers games for the Nintendo system (Stealth Force Edition and Cyberton Adventures) doesn’t: it lets you transform at will from vehicle to robot and back.
Over 14 levels (called chapters) you will take part as an Autobot or Descepticon and fight your way from point A to point B using a variety of weapons (there are 18 in all divided into two catagories) It will take from five to eight hours to get through – average for a game in the genre.
The best part of the game is the arsenal of weapons you get – from a machine gun to a Gatling gun to a lightning shooting gun. But you can only have one weapon from each of the two catagories.
But the appeal of the game takes a turn for the worst when it comes to level design. Some of the 14 levels are interesting (playing as the DinoBot smashing through all those Desceptions is a lot of fun, and the flying parts gave me a thrill as well).
But other levels are just bland. Chapter 12 is just you fighting off an assault team of Descepticons for about ten minutes (or less). And the last chapter is a big letdown; it’s just a trek to the main bad guy and a less than thrilling final boss fight.
What makes the shortcoming even more glaring is the lack of multiplayer/online mode. There’s no co op mode, and there’s no deathmatch mode.
But what’s really annoying is the Primus Mode (something you unlock at level 25). This mode lets you access every gun in the game.
Problem is, I got access to every gun in the game by Level 10, meaning the time it took me to get to Level 25 was a complete waste. Primus Mode doesn’t do anything for me.
Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark is a lot of fun to play a vast improvement over the past two Transformers games in the Nintendo library, but that’s not saying much. The lack of multiplayer is what really tarnishes the product. RENT IT
