Once you decide to get over the obvious backwards step from the first games direction as a Transformers game, this game boils down to 4 things:
1) (Bad) You can't transform... Might as well be called robot commandos.
2) (Good) As a top down shooter its really not all that bad.
3) (Bad) The graphics fail miserably. Think almost DS quality on a PSP...
4) (Good) plenty of missions, campaigns, unlockables, and chars so if you are actually into it replay is decent.
Honestly I think with just 4 minor changes this game could have been pretty fun:
1) The ability to transform would be a must and adding a reason or two to jump into vehicle mode would make it even better.
2) Jumping. oddly I think being able to do it wouldn't add much to game play but not being able to do it feels odd for some reason.
3) Graphics!!! god give an 8 year old some crayons and then polish it up and it could have added so much more to the game. cleaner character models and weapon animations would reallllly improve game play.
4) Firing style. Instead of having a constant stream of lights the whollllllllllle game, put a cool down or overheat on the main weapon such as the consoles and make the secondary weapons actually be weapons and not little missile power ups that are good for one shot.
That added to the current formula could have actually be a really good top down shooter and implemented more Transformer feel to the gameplay thus making it actually worth the money it took to make.
