After finishing the single player campaign just recently, I figure I have enough data to weigh in on the latest game from Silicon Knights. Rather than bore everyone with specifics, I'm going to make a list of Pros and Cons:
Pros: Solid graphics and Smooth gameplay engine Interesting storyline Great voice talent Unique characters, enemies, and items (highly customizable)
Cons: Limited control of player camera Unusual controller layout Relatively short campaign (about 10 hours)
I think the most appealing part of this game is the online co-operative play option, which is missing in many of the premiere RPG-type games on the 360 console. However, this title does have some drawbacks that take away from a high rating: the unusual control scheme does take some time to get used to, and it doesn't always work as intended... targeting specific enemies in a crowd is very difficult, and sometimes impossible. The camera control is also fairly limited.
I was also surprised to find out that while the levels are fairly large, there are only five of them, leaving me with the "unresolved" feeling when I completed the campaign... obviously Silicon Knights decided to leave room for a sequel.
All in all, this is a good entry into the large field of hybrid RPGs, and that's how I rated it. It's a worthwhile rental for sure, but I would recommend trying it out before buying it.
i waited months for this game and it showed up in my mail box... i was the happiest guy in the town... until i played it...
let us start at the top.. no control over the cam. it drives me crazy not to move it around... next the lock-on.. oh boy thats the biggest problem with this game... 20 bad guys on screen u need to have a lock on system that and handle it... not lock-on a guy off the screen or my favorite the i cant lock-on at all.. grrr many of deaths because of that...
besides that lock-on and the cam... i like this game.. good story, looks great and the over 20 hrs to beat is nice too
I must admit, even before I put this game into my Xbox, I already doomed it from all of the critics reviews of this game. Usually that doesn't effect me, but for some reason it did. After all these years of the game being developed, I must say it's quite fun, but not the Meca I had wanted it to be. The graphics are smooth and don't lag behind, the sound is crisp and clear, the vioce actors did a superb job and musical score itself is quite fantastic. The meat and potatoes of the game, is a hack and slash. The controls take some time getting used to, because it's a top down and not FPS (thank god) and the aiming recitcle can be a bit tricky, but nothing detremental. The customization of... well anything in this game is just jaw dropping. I found myself tinkering with about every piece of armor, weapon and gadget I could find to fully customize my character. The one problem I had was, is that it seemed there was a loot drop at every other enemy I killed, so there was so much to try to take in and funnel out what I wanted and didn't work, that it almost got tedious. Oh and the story is interesting, but nothing too ground breaking. It's the same old, machines/covenant/zombies or whatever take over the Earth and you have to find a way to stop them. Some of the cut scenes are quite pretty though and I like the fact that they use Norse Gods throughout the entire game. I quickly found myself back in my college mythology classes. All in all I give it an 8. After all of these years of waiting for this game, from it being bumped around from one console to the next, I found it to be fun, but nothing that really pushes the envelope. I just hope this games replay value is high, because I do want to play through it again.
