Apprehensive from critics, but a fun game

I must admit, even before I put this game into my Xbox, I already doomed it from all of the critics reviews of this game. Usually that doesn't effect me, but for some reason it did.
After all these years of the game being developed, I must say it's quite fun, but not the Meca I had wanted it to be. The graphics are smooth and don't lag behind, the sound is crisp and clear, the vioce actors did a superb job and musical score itself is quite fantastic.
The meat and potatoes of the game, is a hack and slash. The controls take some time getting used to, because it's a top down and not FPS (thank god) and the aiming recitcle can be a bit tricky, but nothing detremental.
The customization of... well anything in this game is just jaw dropping. I found myself tinkering with about every piece of armor, weapon and gadget I could find to fully customize my character.
The one problem I had was, is that it seemed there was a loot drop at every other enemy I killed, so there was so much to try to take in and funnel out what I wanted and didn't work, that it almost got tedious.
Oh and the story is interesting, but nothing too ground breaking. It's the same old, machines/covenant/zombies or whatever take over the Earth and you have to find a way to stop them. Some of the cut scenes are quite pretty though and I like the fact that they use Norse Gods throughout the entire game. I quickly found myself back in my college mythology classes.
All in all I give it an 8. After all of these years of waiting for this game, from it being bumped around from one console to the next, I found it to be fun, but nothing that really pushes the envelope. I just hope this games replay value is high, because I do want to play through it again.
