I'm probably one of the few who has never played Tomb Raider before when it was a PSOne game, but it's not like I don't know who Lara Croft is, or, at least, I thought I knew her. This reboot of the classic series takes the buxom beauty and makes her more relatable and realistic from her previous dual-wielding, Wonder Woman-esque figure that she used to be.
You, as Lara, end up fighting off wolves, hoards of vicious islanders called Solarii, and the dangerous environment on a possibly cursed island, which makes exploring not only thrilling, but heart-pounding as well. The story is actually engaging as I felt my heart tug when one of Lara's crew mates perishes before our eyes and my heart leap while being ambushed by arrows and bullets; also, the characters are well-developed to the point you feel you've known them a while.
Now, I'm not a big fan of shooters because I have the aim of a blindfolded mole, but I have to admit the overall-control of the character was capable; I found aiming my bow & arrow adaptable. I enjoyed upgrading my weapons and improving Lara's skills, like I earned more abilities and deviations to my arsenal every time I upgraded.
Another favorite part of the game was exploring. The visuals were stunning to say the least, and the game knew it (at times, when it pulls away from the action and pans out to a picturesque view of the mountain top or the rushing waves on the coastline). And finally, this would not be a Tomb Raider game without the tombs. Now, while I like the puzzle solving that gets my brain racking, I have to say the puzzles in the tombs were short and not-so-challenging. I understand the focus of this reboot was not on these not-so-secret tombs, but at least make an effort that doesn't make me think that.
In the end, this game is a gem in its own right. I just hope that the next game will focus on what Lara does best and not on just killing hundreds of scraggly islanders.
I am new to PS3 and this is the best game I've played so far. It was exciting in the way of the story line progressed and even this novice kicked butt with the weapons available. Two thumbs up and with games like this I am glad I am in the Network
