As a long-time fan of the series, it was a little difficult getting used to the "semi-reboot". (That is to say, events from past games have happened, but the main characters are MUCH younger, thinner, etc.) That being said, the gameplay was solid and attempts to accommodate multiple play styles (I would say its a STEP in the right direction for players who prefer run-n-gun vs. slow-n-steady stealth, but the game definitely prefers stealth). The plot is fairly intense and fun, as you'd expect from a Clancy-esque game.
However, at the end of the day it is similar to Conviction to me - which is to say a bit of a let down. Just when you think they will venture into some good territory and push limits/boundaries, the writers pull back. Its frustrating.
BUT, I think this game really shines in its SPIES VS MERCS multiplayer. I have tried this in the series over the last maybe decade when it debuted. NOW they have a real sweet mix and balance. I had a blast playing it. The new modes fix severe flaws: frequent respawns instead of dead-n-out, upgradeable suits & weapons, and everything feels quite balanced. The game really gets you to evaluate what abilities & gadgets you take into a match, to best suit the gadgets your opponents are using. For example, the mercs can be annoying with their remote-controlled drone and pick you out of a nice hiding spot. But this can be countered with EMP grenades... and so there are several strength/weakness trade-offs that make this game great!
