If you love the show do not buy this game it will make you really angry. only rent it if you just want to fill up one of your rental spots. you would expect with the popularity of the show that they would make the game at least somewhat playable and enjoyable they did not. in the obvious attempt to just ride the popularity of the show they forced out garbage that people will lose interest in within the first 10 minutes. completely monotonous gameplay coupled with glitchiness and garbage graphics will have you running to the mailbox to send this back. if they even dare to make a second game I hope they take their time and actually make a halfway decent game. this one was not
Despite all the very harsh reviews there are for this game, it's hardly the worst game you'll ever play. That said, it's still quite a ways from being a "good" game. Sadly, this game does not live up to the great name of The Walking Dead in virtually any way. It does almost nothing to add to the much beloved TV show characters of Merle and Daryl.
Instead of focusing on the best aspects of The Walking Dead, namely the interactions and conflicts between people, this game focuses on the action. There are other survivors met in this game, but each and every character is boring and adds nothing to the story that's hardly there in the first place. The gameplay itself actually isn't too bad, aside from the terrible AI. Some weapons are satisfying to use, and running through loads of zombies can be pretty tense. Though it plays as a fairly generic third person action game, it's important to note that this game is very much playable- something games that are truly terrible usually can't even accomplish.
This game did have some fairly decent ideas. There is somewhat of a survival element present as supplies are limited and you can't hold on to very many items. Plus traveling between locations is interesting what with making stops along the way to find supplies or repair your car. Rescued survivors can be utilized to find supplies while you're on a level. Some of these ideas could have been executed better, but I think it shows that at least some effort was put into this game.
In a nutshell, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is not a bad game. It's definitely not a good game either. It all comes together as a mediocre game cashing in on high fanbase for a popular character on a popular show. For fans of the show, this game may be worth a rental. At worst, it's only a waste of roughly 5 hours, the extremely short amount of time it takes to complete this game the first time through.
