I picked this game up because I was just starting into the Tales universe, and it seemed like a good idea. I have to say, this game is very good.
My first impression when I plugged it in was that it was very beautiful. The opening was high quality, something I don't quite expect when it comes from a handheld. The game itself also looks very nice, and I was very impressed with how it handled.
There isn't any horrible loading time like some other PSP games played on the fat PSP, so I imagine playing with a slim PSP would cut the loading time to negligible. On my fat PSP I didn't have to deal with long loading screens every so often, so I didn't mind a few. The game controls quite tightly, and responds well.
Gameplay is good old tales style. You run around like in standard RPG, then you go into battle where you have free control of all your actions. I've always liked the Tales battle system, so this appealed to me a lot.
The sound is pretty good on the PSP. The music isn't to my taste, but it isn't bad so listening to it didn't grate on my ears, like some other games.
Story is there, but not really a strong point of this game. It's your basic save the world scenario, with a few twists. What really would draw people in is the fact that characters from other Tales games play a big role in the game. You run into characters from the popular Tales of Symphonia almost right off the bat, and Tales of the Abyss characters make a brief appearance soon after.
This is a game that is designed to appeal to fans of the Tales series. That's not to say it won't appeal to others though. It's a very good game, and I think everyone should give it a shot. A nine out of ten score from me.
