For a game that is 5 years old I still find my self returning to it whenever the opportunity presents it self. The Main Protagonist Yuri Lowell is by far my favorite in the tales series.Granted I haven't played them all. He can be described as Batman like except hes dirt poor and has zero problems killing people in the name of justice. And hes voiced by Troy Baker. This game is a traditional jrpg with all of the anime cliches you would expect to find. Humorous, mature, corny and sometimes down right uncomfortable dialogue will keep you entertained throughout the game. Each character goes through their own individual arc as the player progresses through the story allowing you to learn more about the characters accompanying Yuri on this very long journey. By very long I mean you can kill almost 100 hours of your life if you decide to do everything there is to do.There is also a game + mode which adds to the games value.
The combat system while hard to get the hang of is a breath of fresh air for rpgs. Real time combat needs to be in all rpgs. The days of turn based is dead and buried and when you finally get the hang of all the different combinations of attacks(normal and special) you will understand why. Encounters are not random you have to run into the enemy in order or initiate the encounter. However avoiding the enemy is not recommended as you will need to grind in order to be able to compete with many of the games bosses. Grinding with also get you accustomed to the combat system. As we all know practice makes perfect. If you plan on devoting 50 or so hours to game game whats another couple hours spent practicing your skills? If you are a Tales fan then you shouldn't need much more convincing to pick this game up. It is well worth a rental or even a purchase given the amount of content in this game. Graphically the cel shading is absolutely gorgeous and the fully animated cut scenes will leave you wanting more. I Wish they would bring the ps3 port to the US
I see this game has good reviews... but I'm an adult, so I think that's where the disconnect is. This game has no physics, horrible fighting dynamics, bad graphics, and based on the controls, the people who ported it to xbox clearly have never played an xbox game.
It's very slow and boring - maybe it's good for a small child but I found it so painful that after 60 minutes I got rid of the game for good.
