You have Manual, Semi-Auto and Automatic battle settings and strategies for each character.
For those of us that know "Tales of" (think similar to fans of Final Fantasy) you have to know what you're getting into. I was able to talk my non-gamer friend into playing it and she liked it but not enough to take it on and beat it. However as a fan I can only feel this was the best incarnation yet, story was fairly background noise in the middle as the narrative gets pulled along painstakingly by "Spoiler" Jar Jar Binks'd "End Spoiler" some miracle and the combat is nice and the crafting too.
So I set it on hard a the start and have been playing on Chaos since.
Easy / Normal / Moderate / Hard / Evil / Chaos difficulties unlocked on my first run through 100 hours played and 40+ titles on all my characters maxed. Still haven't beat the game 1800 encounters most on auto battle while waiting for DoTA matches to load. Don't know how it ends yet, don't really care, it serves as a time killer with a controller.
Ok ill keep it short. It starts off really slow. The story line is very kid friendly and can be kind of dry for adults. But this game has depth. the weapon customization will have you busy for hours. tons of side missions, the battle system is pretty deap. over all you will spend close to 100 hours playing this game is you want to complete everything. a very good RPG.

I liked the story and sidequests of this game, but this game was destroyed for me by the poor battle system. I tried really hard to give this title a chance and play through it, but the battle system is just terrible. When fighting bosses you almost have to be overleveled because usage of items in the battle makes the player stand still and you get the beat down while using the healing item which usually leads to death. It is overly complicated to switch to another character during battle and you team mates AI is ridiculously stupid which also usually leads to death. I am not an old school RPG freak who thinks every battle should be turn based, but for the love of all RPGs take time to make the battle system as good as Star Ocean. A little more work by the developers could have saved this game for me and I would probably be singing its praises instead of warning people to stay away from it.
