Basically, this game just doesn't feel finished. It's got all the elements to become a good game, but it doesn't quite make it, and comes across more as a tech demo than anything.
I rented this game because I enjoy watching TNA Impact on tv and wanted the chance to play as some of my favorite wrestlers in a game. It certainly gets some of the presentation aspects right, as it features authentic music and intro videos from the tv show. The graphics are better than I expected, the moves work pretty well (though not perfectly), and I think the wrestler selection is pretty good for a DS game.
The problem is that everything is so bland once I actually get into the game. Every wrestler has basically the same move set, plus a finishing move. The animations vary somewhat from wrestler to wrestler, but the effects are always about the same, and the amount of damage done is pretty much the same as well. Is it wrong of me to expect that Samoa Joe or Rhino will handle differently than Sting? There's very little challenge, and it doesn't feel like it increases much as I progress through the ranks on the way to the World Title. In fact, it's as if I'm wrestling the same opponent with a different skin every match. There is no commentary from the announcers, the storyline I played through was weak and had no real personality, and there's barely any ambient sound (like noises from the crowd) during the matches. I understand the DS has limitations, but I think it's capable of much better than this.
So, basically, this game has the raw elements of TNA wrestling, but none of the character that makes me tune into Impact every week.
I guess it's time to try one of the WWE games, and see if it fairs any better than this. Hopefully, there will one day be a TNA game that actually tries to give the fans what they want.
This game is one of the worst wrestling games I have ever played. The controls are awkward and unresponsive at times. The AI seems confused at times. While I am a fan of TNA Wrestling, this game nowhere near compares to any WWE Game. TNA needs to step it up in the video game world, if they ever want to catch up with WWE.
