Harder Than Dark Souls

This is the most difficult game I've played in a while. It started off almost too easy and the picks up pace near World 7. The special worlds that you unlock after beating the game are nearly impossible when you get to Special World 7. It doesn't feel like a cheap difficulty though, its a fun challenge.

Gameplay:
Typical Mario with a 3D twist. A lot of the levels actually use the 3D to their advantage to provide different types of challenges. This game definitely couldn't have been for the original DS or the Wii, the 3D is actually vital to the game play in some circumstances. Definitely novel and as always fun to play. Its kind of a mix between classic Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64/Galaxy. The power ups are pretty fun to use too.

Graphics/Sound:
It looks as good as a Wii game on a smaller screen. Classic Mario tracks are used and bring back nostalgia of the older games.

Lasting Appeal:
Like I said, there's a huge difficulty spike near the end and especially in the 8 additional special worlds which double the length of the game. Most of the time you won't be able to challenge a world's castle until you've collected a certain number of large gold coins. I wish they would have made the collecting of these coins optional as it sometimes makes the player go through the same level more than once when they would rather go forward in the game. If there was an aspect of this game I thought would cause players to give up on it, it would be the coin collecting.

Pros:
+ Implements 3D into the game play - a unique Mario experience
+ 16 worlds - plenty to do
+ Provides a challenge rarely seen any more.

Cons:
- Collecting coins to unlock levels is tedious and seems tacked on to increase length of game

You can't beat Mario be it in 3D or old school. Gotta love the classics! Great game! I'm a wee bit addicted.

Is Mario Ever Bad?

I always love Mario games, and this one is quite well done. The use of the hardware is very complete, including the gyros and, of course, the 3D. My only complaint is that I didn't get Yoshi. One thing I really appreciated was the way the game referenced older episodes in the series, such as the end of level poles and nostalgic music.
