Summer Athletics: The Ultimate Challenge features events from seven categories - let's take a look at each one and rate them from "Very Bad" to "Very Good".
The Swimming events are the worst of the bunch - the game hardly recognizes the motions of the Wiimote no matter how fast or slow those motions are; the AI swimmers leaves me in their wake. VERY BAD
The Track Cycling also wouldn't recognize the proper movement of the Wiimote; I lagged behind the rest of the pack and couldn't do anything to catch up. VERY BAD
The Pole Vault and High Jump work; but in order to do well, I'd have to perform dozens of jumps, and I got bored after ten jumps. VERY BAD
The Diving Contest would be fun - if the game played fair. I set up a great jump and almost perfect entry to the water only to have my avatar make a big splash that ruins my score. BAD
The archery events are more of a hit or miss; the aiming marker moved wildly even when I kept the Wiimote steady. The Recursive Bow doesn't let me choose when to fire, the AI fires the shot for me, and that's not a good thing. OKAY
The Running events wore me out; constantly moving the Wiimote and Nunchuck up and down takes its toll on my arms - especially the 400 meter sprint. OKAY
The throwing events are the best of the bunch; it take a while to understand the controls, but once I did, I got great results. GOOD.
So, the score ends up like this: 3 "Very Bad"s, 1 "Bad", 2 "Okay"s and 1 "Good"
I could say a few things about the Competition mode and the Career mode, but when the events are mostly flawed, I'm just wasting your time.
Summer Athletics is a fun game to rent and play a few times, but I wouldn't spend $30 on it.
