Star Wars shooter? You don't say...

In my day, I've played many Star Wars games, several of them shooters. Star Wars Starfighter is indeed a shooter. Unfortunately, there are several problems with this game that make it inferior to other Star Wars shooters. Let's start with the basics. Graphics are subpar, especially when you get a good look at the character models, both in-game and during cutscenes. A lot of that can be linked to the game's age, but I have to mention it. Sound, as with most Star Wars games, is very nice. Gameplay has some issues. Flight controls are a little unconventional as your shoulder buttons act as thrust and brakes and steering becomes disorienting as you're working in a first-person view. The main game is also short and linear. You can do bonus objectives to unlock medals in each of the 14 levels, but your rewards aren't that impressive, just some levels and unlocked ships that you've already played with in the main game. Another blow to this game is the story. Usually Star Wars games have had great story lines or at least a functional one, but this story has characters you just don't care about or understand. That makes the game feel less important to complete. Rogue Squadron did a much better job and the third-person perspective worked much better than first-person here. Somewhat enjoyable, but don't we strive for more than that?
