I get people don't really like this game, it is fairly slow, you don't have a lot of precise controls, and the between mission "banter" and briefings are poorly told and have lame characters. However, this game does a great job at simplifying what it must be like to control every aspect of a huge starship in battle. There is a reason the Enterprise has over 400 crewmen making everything work and a bridge crew to control movement, weapons, sensors, etc. What this game does well is to let a Star Trek geek fly around and shoot sh#t. Pretty good (if repetitive) music, spot on sound effects (photon torpedoes and phasers sound just like they should - and the red alert klaxon is awesome). Gameplay basically consists of scanning a sector, locking on to enemy ships (sometimes after hailing them and failing to resolve the conflict), accelerating with enough speed to allow you to turn quickly, and firing your weapons as they power up. And here is the tactical part - you only have a limited number of phaser and torpedo banks and they recharge slowly, so you must angle your ship to take advantage of active weapons, all the while keeping damaged shielding out of the line of fire. I found it to be incredibly addicting. But then again I'm a huge Star Trek geek...
