Basically, it's a rudimentary platformer. If you're into that type of thing, then you might want to look at this. If you loathe platformers, then you should run away screaming.
Achievement wise, it's not an awful grind. If you're on Gamefly for picking up points, this probably should be on your list somewhere in the middle. It's no Avatar (takes about 6-8 hours to 1k), but it could be a lot worse.
While Space Chimps has pretty good graphics, a cute little story, and adorable little space suit wearing monkeys that waddle around appropriately, this game is too dull for teens/adults and too complicated for young children. I'm not quite sure who the intended audience is for this game...perhaps achievement junkies who will put up with anything to get another 1000 added to the gamer score?
I'm a member of the latter group. I rented this for an easy 1000 points. In that area, the game does deliver. It took me about 4 hours to get 1000 points. There are 560 collectables, which are a bit of a pain to collect, but for the most part the collectables are not too hard to find. I only had to spend extra time on two of the levels looking a little harder for one that I missed.
The time trials are much harder. In the time trials, you must race through each level and make it to the finish line in a certain amount of time. The time requirements leave no room for error. In the early levels, you can get the time challenge done after 1 or 2 run throughs. The later levels (with moving platforms, lava, disappearing platforms, etc) are much harder to do. Pretty much one mistake and you've got to start all over. The last level I finished with ONE second to spare after 6 or 7 attempts. They're definately not impossible challenges, but you will get annoyed. Guaranteed.
To top it off, the game mechanics are a bit wonky, the camera does weird things, mobs hit and move strangely, and there are serious issues with depth perception (i.e. jumping onto a rope that looks super close actually requires a running start and double jump to catch it if you are lucky...).
Rent it if you want a fairly easy 1000 and can handle being annoyed. Don't rent this if you are a teen or adult and you want a good rental. Don't rent this if you think your young children will enjoy it. They will not. They will get frustrated; I am in my 30s and I got frustrated.
