Easily one of the best series' of games ever released (back in it's hayday it gave Mario a SERIOUS run for his money...literally!), here is 16-bit Sonic as it was meant to be. All together in one tight, snug package.
Everything here is wonderful. Obviously, the games are the highlight, but the other little things (digital scans of the original manuals, concept art, comics, etc.) are really interesting to take a good look at.
So the games...
Sonic 1: The rival equivalent to the original Super Mario Brothers and the single most important game from the Sega days. While a lot of differences are noticeable in the later games, and many are much better, the sheer importance game of what this did for gaming is unquestionable.
Sonic 2: Better level design, more well-designed sprites and a great soundtrack, this game is a must.
Sonic 3: Best level design of all the games and with the best soundtrack (the graphics are on-par with Sonic 2's) it's one of the best in the collection.
Sonic & Knuckles: A continuation of Sonic 3, it is much harder and does not include the save feature Sonic 3 does. The soundtrack is still a high point here.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Put together the last two games and you get this. You can play as Knuckles in the earlier levels and Tails in the later ones. Best game in the collection.
Mean Bean Machine: A Tetris Attack clone. I like it, but others won't.
Flicky: Some people like this but I just don't see the point.
Ristar: This was the original concept for what Sonic was gonna be. It's still a fun game if you've never heard of it.
Sonic Spinball: People call it clunky, but it is definitely hard. I still have yet to beat it. I love it as a challenge.
Sonic 3-D Blast: It's a good offering for Sonic fans, but newcomers to the series might be put-off by it. It's definitely different.
S2&K: Good but I still cannot beat the last boss with Knuckles.
Overall, easily worth buying over renting. If you have a PS2 or Xbox I recommend the plus version.
