Sly 3 is another great platformer from Sucker Punch. Unfortunately Sly 3 seems like a step back for the entire series than a step forward. Even though it is fun to play it doesn’t achieve the greatness of Sly 2.
The story begins in the present and you will be playing the game in a bunch of flashback scenario. The story is interesting and your mission assignment is told by Bentley, Sly’s partner in the usual slideshow fashion which is always entertaining to watch.
The graphic is cel shaded and works well even though there are clipping issues. The recorded voice overs, music and sound effects work really well to give this game great charm to being a know-it-all world class thief.
The game improves upon Sly 2 this time by offering even more characters to play. A whole gang of criminals will join the usual cast of Sly, Bentley and Murray. The strength of this game is that these character’s mission and each of these mini-game mission is very well integrated with the story. It keeps the game fun and fresh throughout the adventure.
The bad thing is that the game is rather short. Of course in order to get 100% you will need to play the game again in the Master Thief Mode. The Master Thief Mode offers almost no new content except you have to redo the mission with different sets of goals like a time limit or limited health.
Another problem with the game is money. In Sly 2 you spent very little time stealing money which made it fun. This was because you had another source of income to buy new moves with which was finding the artifacts which sold for a lot of money. There were bottles as well which gave you a new move. In Sly 3 both the bottles and artifacts are missing. So in order to purchase new moves for your characters it takes a long time of stealing to be able to afford them. This once again artificially extends the game length but the time spent doing this is not fun at all.
