If it’s got wheels (or something similar), chances are somebody is going to make a racing game for it on the Wii. In this case we have the snowmobile, and the game is Ski-Doo: Snowmobile Challenge.
The challenge here is to stay on course with imprecise controls (very imprecise with if you use the Wiimote only tilting controls). Making the controls even more unbearable is the fact that there’s no option to change the control sensitivity. The game won’t adjust to you; you have to adjust to it.
Just sit back and watch as you smash your way through some of the 25 courses available, but most of them are locked, and to unlock them, you have to do better than fourth on every race.
The first few races aren’t bad because there’s not many twists and turns to it, and the AI is dumbed down very much, but it’s not long before the tracks get insanely tough. One track has six - count ‘em six - hair pin turns in it.
The resulting races aren’t even close; I would be stuck in eighth spot by at least thirty seconds - even after a few hours of practice.
You do get a chance to get slightly better vehicles and buy upgrades for them, but there’s one upgrade each for four parts of the vehicle: the engine, the variator (whatever that is), the skis, and the track treads.
You can also change the design of the vehicle with a limited selection of paints for the hood, the sides, and the seat as well as get decals for the hood and seats.
And you can play up to two players with any snowmobile on any track (which is a nice thought).
But these changes are no match for a control scheme that’s out to run me into the snow bank.
Ski-Doo: Snowmobile Challenge needs to have more through and rigorous testing before they released it. SKIP IT
