Going into a holiday season that is rife with amazing titles, I was hoping the string of great games would begin with Silent Hill: Homecoming. I wouldn't say that my assumption was incorrect, but it was a bit off in some areas.
The most impressive aspects of the title revolved around the plot and atmosphere created by the soundtrack and effects, nothing new for a Silent Hill title. The story itself revolves around an ex-soldier searching for his younger brother in a town that is largely missing due to supernatural causes. There are many twists and turns down this frightening path. I wouldn't say this game follows with the stories set by previous Silent Hill titles, so much as it continues with the story arc of the movie. It's not a bad thing, but a few of the die-hards will be disappointed.
Controlling the protagonist (Alex Shepherd) is a chore at times, which is disappointing. While combat may be more heart-pounding than previous titles, I was told the "combat experience" of the character made things easier. I found that blocking and dodging only worked a percentage of the time and this really upset me, to say the least.
The art style is sick and twisted, as is to be expected. Character models were decent but paled in comparison to the awesome creature design that continually one-upped itself throughout. Graphically, the game disappointed a bit. I felt that the title got WAY too dark at points and therefore inhibited my ability to survive, effectively ruining my experience.
While Homecoming is not by any means an awful game, it had problems that ultimately deter it from being one of the holiday's best. Regardless, it is still a welcome addition to the lackluster offerings of modern survival horror. I hope some will brave the title, overlook its flaws to the end, and enjoy the story as much as I did. Happy gaming!
Silent Hill Homecoming was a very impressive game. The storyline is much more informative than other Silent Hill games which tend to lose you. Each cut-scene left me wondering what would happen next. They have also did a better job on sound effects and graphics. The game controls are very easy to learn and make it fun to play the game. Simply put, This game is AWSOME!! Although I haven't been very impressed with most next generation games, I give Silent Hill Homecoming a perfect 10.
This was a bit of a disappointment for me considering this was supposed to be a beautiful next gen. game. However, the animation has some strange flaws, and the controls have some serious bugs, but this game is no Mercenaries 2. So, the flaws do not make the game unplayable. If you've gotta play the next installment in the series have at it, just don't expect it to be the best in the series.
