IGN Preview of Secret Saturdays: Beasts of the 5th Sun
Hey it's Wednesday night and we're tired and punchy. So BAM! This is The Secret Saturdays: Beasts of the 5th Sun preview, kids!
The Secret Saturdays follows the hit Cartoon Network show of the same name. The show is geared mostly at boys, but has a mass market appeal, and the game is going for that as well. A lot of the game appears to be a 3D sidescrolling platformer, but there are also 3D combat sections.
Throughout the game, Zak and the rest of the Saturday family will find cryptids, the monsters that the family tries to keep out of the public eye. Zak has the ability to tame the smaller cryptids, and use them to solve puzzles. The level we saw had a lot of imp-like critters messing with machine wiring. By pressing the C button and pointing at the cryptid, Zak can influence it and make it turn off fire obstacles. Later he got a flying bat monster thing to get in a position where he could use his Claw to swing over a pit. D3 says there will be 40 different cryptids in the game. Not all of them are so easily influenced either. We watched as Zak had to beat the living hell out of a Cafre (a big boar monster). After he kicked its ass the monster was able to join Zak to help fight off thugs.
The entire Saturday family, Fiskerton included" are playable at some point in the game. From what we saw a lot of the combat sections of the game have two characters, allowing the player to switch between Zak and someone else. We got the chance to fight as Drew, using her fire sword. The combat is pretty simple, using the B button for normal attacks and the Z button for special attacks. No waggle moves.
There were some neat environmental moments in the game. Occasionally we would run by a window, where a big white dragon thing could be seen flying around outside. Eventually it enters the building and we had to fight it.
The story and dialogue for the game is written by the creators of the show, and the cast does the voicework for it.
