The story here, while having direct ties with the first film, is self-contained, and can be easily understood by those who are not familiar with the Saw franchise (aka me). The basic premise is that Detective David Tapp has become obsessed with catching the Jigsaw Killer, and as a result, essentially ruined his life. His old partner, Steven Sing, is dead, his wife has divorced him, a local reporter has been slandering him in the newspaper, and now he's been captured by Jigsaw and locked inside an insane asylum. Sounds peachy, right?
The game itself falls within the survival horror genre, with a heavy focus on puzzle solving and occasional combat. While the puzzles range from simple matching games to fairly complex methods of finding the codes for combination locks, none of these are particularly difficult. They do, however, usually come with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that always kept me wanting to play more of the game. The combat is the complete opposite. Though there are many weapons in the game, ranging from scalpels and syringes to nailed baseball bats and revolvers, the controls involved in using these weapons are clunky, and sometimes unresponsive. The graphics are sub par, especially in terms of character models. The environments are fairly detailed though, and there's usually a lot of neat things hidden in the backgrounds. Animations can be somewhat blocky, but for the most part they look good. The game received a lot of heat for its violence and gore, but there's a surprising number of cutaways that prevent you from seeing the best of it.
The synopsis claims there are a bunch of moral choices in this game, but that's just plain false. I don't know who the marketing guy is that game up with that, but he's probably got a nose as long as a Subway sandwich.
All in all, the game is a solid 7. Puzzles are fun, and the story is interesti
