I have to admit, after SSX3 I was spoiled. If you cut your teeth on SSX3, you got accustomed to free roaming environments, lots of challenges, and big wide open mountains.
On Tour just didn't feel like SSX, I got the feeling that I was playing an Amped wanna be. The courses were open, but still they felt more linear that in previous SSX games.
The controls were tight and responsive. The tricks were easy to execute, and looked great.
If this game had not been titled SSX, I would say "WOW!, Great game!!" But the name SSX sets the bar pretty high, and this game has trouble clearing it.
SSX3 was a great game, and it wasn't broke. But, they went and tried to fix it anyway.
Basically it all boils down to this... If you didn't play SSX in one of it's first three incarnations, you'll be pleased. But, if you're expecting a continuation of the SSX series, you might be disappointed.
SSX On Tour is a departure for the series in that it's not very good. It's not really bad, but certainly not a benchmark for the series. When you start this extreme sport excursion you'll be greeted by weird hand-drawn sketches of fretting horses, brace-laden roadies and creatures that apparently represent mountain wildlife. It's all very strange and, honestly, doesn't seem to fit the game, which goes for well-rendered characters and environments. And if the game offers anything, it's a nicely built mountain and it runs smoothly even when racing down the slopes. On the audio side, music is limited and sound effects repetitive. The gameplay is where things take a turn for the worse. Pulling off tricks seems like a chore when the trick system controls incorporate three face buttons, both triggers, the D-Pad and the analog sticks. It can be frustrating to figure out how to effectively pull of high scoring combos. Racing is often marred since missing a hidden shortcut can be the difference between first and eighth place. Hitting rails and accomplishing other goals seemed too cumbersome as well. And while I'm complaining, why is it that within a second I can go from 100 meters ahead to 50 behind? How can I tell how I'm actually doing when the scale swings so quickly? While the goals at the beginning will seem reasonable, you'll find that later challenges are excessively difficult. Sure I can get 400 meters ahead of my pro-level opponent... in two minutes. Oh yeah, 300,000 trick points ahead of my rival before the three minute mark? No problem. One time I surpassed the 950,000 point score of my opponent, only to get a score of 0 because I couldn't cross the finish line before time ran out. Aggravating. This game goes for style over substance and even the style fails to captivate. On the plus side they added skiing as an option. I know everyone was waiting for that. If you want a snowboarding game, I suggest picking up SSX 3. While two years older, it's still far better.
Living in Los Angeles, I don’t get to hit the slopes quite as often as I would like to. What do I do? The next best thing, fire up SSX on Tour and combo some of the sickest tricks ever pulled on a snowboard. In real life I can only do about half of the moves, but in SSX, I am a living legend.
SSX has the best controls and feel when it comes to the extreme games and the combos and power-ups are far superb to the competitions. In this SSX, the whole goal is to work your way up from beginner to ruling the tour. Your trek to the top is marked by a series of events in slope style, racing, tricks, and now they have also added in some new challenges to keep the game fresh.
This game has the capability to make you feel like you're flying down the mountain. The snow flies up around you as you dodge, grind, and jump over trees all the while trying to beat the other racers down the hill.
This is another one of those games that I like to have around - it’s always fun to do a 720 backflip. If you don’t know what that is then you definitely need to play this game.
