"Fair" at best. Let's not exaggerate.

This game is in need of serious reconsideration. People are too kind in their scores. All too often people give bad games a "7" or a "6." Come on, people! Admittedly, I don't usually write reviews of games I haven't finished, but this one bored me in just a couple hours and I felt no compulsion to finish it. I was, however, frustrated with it enough to need to write this review.
I rented it having fondly recalled the original arcade version of Rygar from way back when. This game has none of the feel of that game. Many updates of late have done a great job of changing the mechanics and look of old games without changing their feel (Metroid, for example).
The graphics are terrible, even by 2002 PS2 standards. Even worse, this game begs to be compared to other games of the period like Ico (one of the most beautiful games ever) and the first Prince of Persia (amazing level design). Moreover, when you compare it to more recent and similar-themed games like God of War, this game looks like a real piece of junk.
Camera angles suck. It's not always clear where you're going since the graphics are so bad. Fighting is dull and amounts to a simple button mashing technique (if one could even call it "technique"). Heck, I'm not even sure why I'm writing so much about such a terrible game.
The controls are awful. Resident Evil games (prior to RE4) are known for clunky controls, but Rygar sets a new standard for "tank-like" character controls. I may as well have been steering a stone block. Just terrible.
The save system is too frequent and takes too long. Passageways are not always visible, and items are useless. In fact, there's next to nothing memorable, useful, fun, or interesting about any facet of this game.
Play this game, if only to get a sense for what other games do right. This game will show you if you've begun to take anything for granted in better games.
