When I put this game into my GameQ, it was more in hope than anything else. I mean most rugby fans, players, and a lot of gamers in general probably know the deal with rugby video games at this point; huge unrealized potential and ultimately disappointing for the still growing rugby fan base. This title is no exception and if you want to enjoy it, you really need to want it!
Saying that, its not without some charms. The commentary is above average (although it can get repetitive fairly quickly), the audio and crowd effects are well done and do give the games atmosphere, and the game play finally allows smooth pop passes out of the tackle.
However the bad out weights the good with yet again terrible AI defense no matter the difficultly setting. The rucks are a bit of a joke with no options to leave players out (basically rucks are turned into non-moving scrums 95% of the time). You should also be aware that yellow and red cards seem to be dished out at random. (I got a red card at the very first ruck of the game for "persistent infringement" 20 seconds into the game). There are a lot of other annoying glitches/game play mechanics all around the game, too many to mention here.
I rated the game a very generous 6. Basically 3 out of the 6 points are there because I'm a rugby nut, which clouds my view of the game as a regular gamer.
Its no "Jonah Lomu Rugby" (made in 1997, to my mind the best rugby video game), however if your like me and have just been waiting forever for a new rugby game, then stick it in your GameQ. Don't expect to fall in love with or anything, but it will give a day or too of fun, especially during the ongoing RWC 2011.....Which Ireland will be winning by the way!!! :-)
