Rugby 2006 Review

I'm not a fan of rugby nor do I know how to play or well..anything at all about rugby, but i gave it a try and I was pleasantly surprised that I was well, having fun. I didn't know what I was doing but I figured it fairly fast, by the end of my first game i comprehended how to score, kick, scrum, and toss the ball away, not bad for my first game ever. Aside from knowing how to play, the graphics were what they should be, nothing special, just not bad. I really couldn't get involved into the franchise like mode because I don't know players or anything, so I can't really help with that, but the gameplay was good. So in closing, if you're looking for a game to pick up quick and have fun laughing at eachother's lack of comprehension of the game, then this is worth a try, and if you're a fan of rugby I would highly suggest this game, since it's the only one of it's kind and it's not that bad either.

First off, unless you are a Rugby fan like myself, you shouldn't up and buy the game. But I do strongly encourage you to give it a chance despite you likely being a bloody Yank.

Within the first 10 minutes of the game, you'll realize Rugby 06 doesn't have near the same amount of depth, options or quality as you would expect from EA's other sports game. I feel a bit cheated that a minority such as Rugby fans get short changed, even it is the only the very start of the series.

The tutorial will get you up to speed very efficiently and quickly with the scrums, rucks and tries of Rugby. The closest thing you get to a Franchise mode is a Tournament mode, which is 4 or 5 games played to determine a champion. It's a shame, but games are very quick and move along very smoothly.

The graphics, they aren't great, but they aren't bad. They're perfectly serviceable, famous players are discernible and they certainly aren't painful to the eye. But it is a shame that EA hasn't put the same amount of polish as it would into it's Madden franchise.

The sound works well enough, the only gripe being is that the commentary isn't the most spectacular. Comments by the two narrators are incredibly general in order for it to be applied to any game. EA Trax put quite a limited selection into the game as well, most of it being rock. Again, for a fledgling franchise, you can't expect much more.

The controls won't cause you as much frustration as you would think. They are very simple and intuitive allowing for any situation to be figured out in a matter of seconds.

The one true problem with the game is the camera. Throw-ins can be a bit disconcerting as you may not know which direction to run after the camera switches back to normal. And as the camera runs along the sideline looking toward the other sideline, you can't really see what's coming in front of you.

So, in closing, this game is fun, and you have to allow some breathing room for a game series so early in life.
