Rogue Trooper for PlayStation 2 Reviews by Gamers

Few games leave me with such mixed feelings. This is one of 'em.

The game plays pretty nicely, perhaps not as smoothly as it could have been, but it works. Combat is fun; you get a few options that you can explore during combat (hugging walls, sniping, tossing grenades, ect). The biggest thrill is planting your gun or hologram and sneaking behind enemies, getting a special cut-scene melee kill. It feels good, it looks good, and it's not incredibly hard to pull off. The graphics are pretty low grade but still looks colorful. The game doesn't dive too hard into story, but it's there and it's.. Uh.. Well, nice.

There are problems though. For instance, planting your gun lets you move around without it; the game prevents you from leaving it behind when leaving areas. This works most of the time, but there are places where you'll plant your gun, have a ball, then reach a part of the level by accident that forbids you from going back for your gun. No auto-replacement on the gun or nothin'. This happened a few times and made me replay a couple levels half way through. Real pain, and that stuff shouldn't really happen in this day and age of gaming.

Accuracy is iffy in normal fire or sniping. Throwing grenades is pretty simple but sometimes requires too much time to throw. Enemies are stupid and stand on your grenade anyways. Reloading is automatic by just standing there - sometimes it takes a while to get your bag to reload ya'. Sucks, but not a huge problem.

All in all, there isn't a whole lot to complain about. It feels good to play the game. Buying ammo whenever is usually an easy process with plenty of cash to be had. There was a part where I was short on cash (er, salvage), but I could get through alright.

There is one more thing I should mention. I got stuck in walls a couple of times. A combo of crouch/wall hug will do that sometimes, particularly around boxes/objects. I would get out after a couple minutes of panic, but I might have just been lucky.

the best games always seem to arrive at a system's twilight, no ?...as corporate Sony begins to close the curtain on yet another classic system and convinces us of our need to shell out our savings accounts for the bells and whistles of next-gen gaming in it's infancy, it's games like Rogue Trooper that backfire on this master plan and keep us content with our trusty 'ol PS2s all the while longer...or, at least 'til they lower that predicted PS3 price for us :]...sheesh...

anyways, long story short, this game rockz the PS2, an awesome reminder that this system's still got kick in it...color pallete stays a bit on the dark side for most of the game, but the graphics remain solid nonetheless...where this runner/gunner excels most, though, is in it's surprisingly easy and excellent controls, w/ duck n' cover options reminicent of a Killswitch/Ghost Recon combo...being able to use walls for cover on top of fast paced action really adds to the fun of the intense, intergalactic firefights of the Rogue Trooper GI solo-soldier...

the single-player game doesn't necessarily revolutionize action gaming by any means...and while the AI is tuned, it gets predictable after a bit...however, for everything this title lacks in overall strategy, it is easily made up for ten-fold by an awesome blend of cool action title aspects and a very unique weaponry system makin' this one sweet action game...the graphics are sharp, the action's engaging, and while Eidos could've dome away w/ some of the Tomb Raider-esque aspects, the good mix of scattered support missions and solo ops keep the game runnin' at a more solid action-based pace...the awesome 2-Player options only round out the solid package all the more...

While this is more of a weekend renter than a buyer in my opinion, many props to Eidos for makin' me wipe the the faint dustline that was beginning to form on my PS2 :]
