Supremely mediocre

Red Steel is, at its best, a completely average shooter. You've got the standard guns, uninspired, generic enemies, repetitive, uninspired maps, poor graphics, effects, and sound, and just generally nothing above average. The story is an uninspired and cliche "save the princess" motif with the end of each level being "the princess is in another castle." The game's strength should be its combination of traditional shooter situations with sword fights, but the sword fights are really just a poorly executed and out-of-place mini-game where you have to swing the wii remote and nunchuk in time with the enemy attacks--or this is what it would be if the controls actually worked as designed. The game's weakness is definitely control. Aside from the poor sword fights, the game has a pretty horrendous system of walking and aiming that is physically demanding (I felt like I was going to develop carpal tunnel if I played any more), slow, clunky, clumsy, and non-intuitive. The game is playable, but I just can't really think of any reason to recommend this game unless you are absolutely in love with shooters. Skip it.
