It's nice they tried to get a legitimate FPS onto the Wii, but this game is just absurd. It's more difficult to aim the gun in the game than it is to aim the little hand on the Wii main menu, and it just gets worse from there. With a two-stick controller like any other console, this would have been decent, but trying to play this with remote-and-nunchaku felt like trying to juggle with one hand and give a cat a bath with the other.
My Wii tells me I spent 51 minutes on this game (which includes messing with the options menu and watching cutscenes), and it nearly gave me a headache. Unless you are a masochist or you have no other console or computer on which to play a real FPS, avoid this game so you don't waste your time.
Red Steel is, at its best, a completely average shooter. You've got the standard guns, uninspired, generic enemies, repetitive, uninspired maps, poor graphics, effects, and sound, and just generally nothing above average. The story is an uninspired and cliche "save the princess" motif with the end of each level being "the princess is in another castle." The game's strength should be its combination of traditional shooter situations with sword fights, but the sword fights are really just a poorly executed and out-of-place mini-game where you have to swing the wii remote and nunchuk in time with the enemy attacks--or this is what it would be if the controls actually worked as designed. The game's weakness is definitely control. Aside from the poor sword fights, the game has a pretty horrendous system of walking and aiming that is physically demanding (I felt like I was going to develop carpal tunnel if I played any more), slow, clunky, clumsy, and non-intuitive. The game is playable, but I just can't really think of any reason to recommend this game unless you are absolutely in love with shooters. Skip it.

Red Steel is not the greatest 1st person shooter for the wii. The graphics are not good and the character reactions and explosions are all the same, all the time. I would not recommend red steel to people who have been playing for some time, but beginners may find it enjoyable.
