Rockstar spent alot of time and alot more money (rumored to have spent between 80-100 million) developing this game. And now that it is out, I must say that all that time and money has made one of the best video games I've ever played.
Think Grand Theft Auto 4 wild west style. Instead of driving cars you ride horses. instead of big cities you travel vast open deserts and plains, occasionally finding small settlements and towns. Now while it plays alot like GTA 4, this game is nowhere close to the same game outside of the setting and characters. This is GTA 4 on steroids. The graphics are better, the story is perfect. There is so much to do you'll find yourself playing for hours without even going through one of the main story missions. There really isn't a big amount of extras to do in GTA 4. RDR offers so much to do you won't want to play the main mission at times. Hunting, horse taming, random side missions, train hold-ups, random bandit encounters everywhere, poker, liars dice, arm wrestling.... The list goes on and on.
The characters are all potrayed very well. Capturing the time setting perfectly. The voice acting is superb. The story makes you care about the good guys and hate the bad guys. The only flaw in the story is that it can get predictable at times.
The gameplay is very much the same as GTA 4. The weapon selection is really the only difference. Selecting a weapon can be frustrating at times but is a step above cycling through all the weapons in your inventory. The enemy A.I. isn't extremely smart but they aren't stupid either. They will get behind cover and try to get back behind cover when you fire. That being said it is pretty easy to wipe out an entire enemy camp by yourself. And friendly A.I. is dumb as a rock. When you have characters at your side don't expect them to do much work. You will still need to do most of the shooting. They might pick off one or two bad guys but you'll be doing the rest.
Overall this game is nearly perfect. BUY IT!
This isn't an in-depth review of RDR (there are plenty of those around), but I just wanted to say that you know a game RULES when it gives people multiplayer stories to tell that are so interesting, they make non-gamers want to start playing video games. Where I work, RDR is starting a revolution and it's awesome because we have enough people for a posse!
