The Wild West is a wild good time

What can you say that hasn't already been said about Rockstar's latest gem? This is the Western game console owners have been waiting for. While not quite a straight sequel to the PS2's "Red Dead Revolver", it certainly builds on that game's mechanics and look. "Red Dead Redemption" puts us in the boots of John Marston, a former outlaw recruited by the Feds to hunt down his old gang buddies. Unfortunately for Marston, he's also a former outlaw with a family, and it is his family that the Feds threaten to get him to journey to New Austin to do their work for them. And what a journey he gets to take. The wide open vistas are beautifully rendered, and the towns have a solid, authentic feel to them. Like the GTA games, there is a lot of humor to be found in the conversations held by the NPCs. Marston is quite a funny guy himself (just listen to his remarks as he skins a skunk), and overall the voice acting is superb. There are plenty of characters for Marston to meet on the range, some important to the main story line, and some that offer a multitude of side quests to take on. Controls are terrific, though it does take some getting used to when riding horses. The Dead Eye mechanic makes a return, making gunplay a bit easier as well as more selective. Targetting body parts can be helpful when trying to take hombres alive for the higher bounty. This West has a ton to do besides the main story missions- hunting, collecting, treasure hunting, poker, horseshoes, collecting bounties, and just riding and enjoying the scenery. You can spend hours doing all sorts of things besides the well written story. A couple of glitches make this less than perfect (some glitches make for some amusing encounters) but hey, the Old West was less than perfect. This is a definite buy, and well worth the full purchase price. Lasso this one, grab a horse, and enjoy the ride!

An Amazing Rockstar Creation

Let's start out by saying: "This is an amazing game." There's only a couple minor criticizations that I could even think of making to this brilliant game, but I'll get to that later.

The feel of Red Dead is incredible. It immerses you into the most incredible Western experience that I've ever felt. Everything about the map seems very realistic (to a videogame extent, where they try to cram different climates on one map, one corner being forest/snowy mountainous, the other 90% being desert.) Sprinting along the desert seeing nothing but cacti, patches of grass, and huge mesas and spectactular rock formations in the distance. Armadillos, rabbits, deer, elk, goats, and snakes scurrying out of the way of your stampeding stallion, and at night, hearing the howls of a coyote pack on the horizon. I think in reality, it's just the well-tuned environment that is the foundation of how this is a great game. Every detail that you'd ever think of as Western presents itself somewhere in this game.

The storyline is another part of this game that needs mentioning. You essentially play the Western equivalent of a badass on his quest to save his family, yada yada, play the game, it's a great Western story, I was impressed. And I think it's the character dialogue that really brought the story to life for me. The New Austin voices had the awesome tinge of Southern accent, with very authentic Mexican accents (as far as a white American from Oregon can tell), the voice actors must have been on their game. I'm specifically impressed with the voices of John Marston and Bonnie MacFarlane, every word spoken seemed genuine to their character.

Now, I'm going to just flatly state my criticizations. Water deeper than 5 feet=death, swimming is always a bad subtraction from any game. Fast travel exists, but it requires that you set up camp first, it's just inconvenient. And that beavers aren't typically in packs running around on a hill NEXT to a river.

100% a must play.

I give it 8.5 because it could've been better, but overall it's a great game. This game can be summarized short & simple, imagine if the Grand Theft Auto series was set in the Wild Wild West. It's basically the same game with extras but in a time era.
