The most bare-boned shooter I've ever played

posted by GTANJ24k (EWING, NJ) Apr 11, 2012

If you love First Person Shooters and can sustain straight FPS gameplay for multiple hours, you will love this game. However, I cannot. This game has the dullest story, the most boring characters, no sense of exploration or wonder at all. Sure, the graphics are pretty, but nothing is interactive. All you do is shoot some people, drive to another location, shoot more people. It's a pretty tiresome affair, and something you should pass on unless you are a meathead.

Dry, boring story

Not a bad shooter, But the story was terrible. There was no explanation of your character, and absolutely no reason to care about him. If you are at all interested in the story, definitely rent first. The mad max car combat was fun, but not actually very relevant in the end. Speaking of the ending, it was awful. They might as well have had a guy jump out and shout "bang, you're dead!"

Left Me Confused and Slightly Used

I am going to come flat out and say it: This game is not of the quality you are used to from Bethesda.
The graphics and visual aspect of the game was astically pleasing but what they had for looks they lost in gameplay.
The game plays like your basic Indie End of the World shooter. You wake up as an unamed hero and run around doing quest after quest. Sounds like my kind of game. Until you realize its not an RPG, in fact its so bulit like an RPG that the fact that it isn't gets kind of confusing.
The quest line is short, the side quests repeative and usually unrewarding (Remember you don't get experiance).

Overall, this game is sub par. This is the kind of game if Bethesda invited you over they would hide in the basement tied to a chair.
Still, it was still a midly entertaining game (beat in 12 hours).
Don't buy this game, rent it. Or borrow it from a buddy.

Epic

The story was great, engaging from the very beginning. The atmosphere draws you in, whenever the music kicks in it get's your adrenaline pumping. There were some great moments where non lethal world objects will give you a brief scare.. Overall I felt it was an AWESOME game, Until I reached the anticlimactic end..

(SPOILER ALERT)

Most games like this one, you get to the end and the hero confronts the main badguy... Most people who are at least halfway through the game expect that they will have some showdown with Gen. Cross or one or even two of his right hand men... The final boss of this game is an endurance fight with the Authority controlled Mutants, while you activate three switches on the computer mainframe.. Then a brief movie that shows you the remaining arcs surfacing, followed by credits... I sat there dumbfounded, because anyone with half a brain would be asking for the rest of the story... Did you escape? Did Elizabeth find a way of curing the mutants? The thought that just because the remaining arcs surfaced, means the world is safe once more is ludacris. I loved the game and would have given it a 10 if the ending was not so horrible. After such an epic journy through the wastes you would expect at least a boss battle..

If you do decide to play through this game, be forwarned that POP Rockets (grenades for the shotgun) are the most effective wep in the game. I took 120 of them into every stage after Subway Town and never had to use more than 50 or so of them each stage on hard. (3rd diff setting). I used about 300 chaingun rounds, 1 bfg (SUCKS), and 40 pop rocket rounds on the last lvl. After you reach Subway Town, you'll need to invest in AP rounds for your weps, Keep Sniper rounds and use em whenever you can, 2 headshots per kill after Sub Town. I Still enjoyed the gameplay, the engine was great and I can't wait till they use it to make another epic game. Perhaps they will learn from the mistake they made with the ending of rage and impr

I wanted to love this game. Right away, I noticed textures took way too long to load and audio cut in/out so much I turned subtitles on so I didn't have to try to read character's lips. Once I FINALLY got to my first gunfight, it was pretty nice and the "badguys" were responsive to gunshot wounds. After wiping out the banditos and waiting for the next level to load, the game froze twice for approx 20 mins before I just turned it off. Hopefully they will smooth this bad boy out and fix the audio or at least make the characters fluent in sign language. COULD be a lot of fun.

Wish to give this game at least a 5 but the story just wasnt there. Crazy (good way) guns, items, complicated enemies to change the playing field this game was at least a 8 out of 10 for me....for the first half of the game. Around the 2nd half or a little later in the game things got bad. It seems like the game wasnt finished and they had a bunch of guys write the rest of the story over night. Rushed, repetitive, and a terrible ending that didn't even explain much of anything. Loved the game in the 1st half. Hated the game on the 2nd half. Had great potential but fell through.

The game in overall was fun, but base on all the work you do to get good weapons and armor this game was extremely short and the ending was horrible. they left you hanging right after you get a brand new weapon which you can only use for the last mission

The landscapes and character motion capture are impressive, but the gameplay is repetitive and the equipment system completely unintuitive. For instance, you can only carry four weapons; if you receive a new one, an old one (random as far as I can tell) is lost permanently. You end up spending all your money on ammunition and then run out halfway through the dungeon you're in (and for some reason, leaving, restocking, and coming back causes all progress to be lost). Plus they needlessly crowbar in a couple car races into the main plot to showcase their middling racing system. All in all, might be okay to rent if you're into the whole post-apocalypse shooter thing, but there isn't much else to it and you'll likely be done in a couple days.

Why should I care?

Rage is an amazing showcase for the new ID graphics engine. The world looks AMAZING & the combat feels fantastic.

BUT...

Right from the first, ID gives you NO REASON TO CARE about continuing deeper into the game. You are a guy who has awakened from a survival "ark" into a dangerous, mad max future. There is a complete lack of mystery or story to drive you forward. For the first few hours of the game, you just run back and forth doing errands for people that you meet. You are never even offered a whiff of an interesting plot to makes you want to continue being an errand boy.

This is very basic storytelling and ID should know better. In Borderlands, you are a treasure hunter looking for the greatest treasure in the galaxy. In Fallout 3, you emerge from the vault in pursuit of your father who has disappeared. There is purpose, there is mystery. In RAGE, you are just an errand boy with no special destiny.

All in all, great graphics and solid gameplay mean nothing if you don't give people a reason to care. I can't wait to see what better storytellers do with the new ID graphics engine.

Feels like its the same story we have seen in a million games before. Apocolypse and after we have bandits and mutants taking over the planet, fight through all of it and some basic story line.

Story Anyone?

It was almost unheard of that a game could come out of Bethesda and not be good. Rage was that game. The story there made me take no interest whatsoever, like I was being dragged over rusty nails from plot point to plot point (wasn't too painful...since there weren't that many plot points). All in all, it seems as if Bethesda and id need to go back and examine this game's complete lack of story. Maybe they were spending too much time on Skyrim to notice that Rage had fallen completely through the cracks. I just hope that Doom 4 will not fall prey to this mediocre story style.

Good stuff, but TOO SHORT!!!

Looked and played like Borderlands, good looking game and fun to play...but beat it in 15 HOURS!!! And there's no reason to really keep playing - no character leveling system, no special weapons to seek out, nothing to make me even care to buy DLC (when it comes out...). Rent it, but don't waste your $60 buying it.

RAGE?

Appropriate name for a game that will have you enraged the whole time with no auto save feature if you forget to save often you'll spend more time redoing hours of gameplay rather than playing new content. The guns are horrible when in close quarters combat which happens to most common type of combat. The Racing is little hokey and uneccesary. Overall played it through only to finish the game but diddnt really enjoy it.

eh this game seemed oddly empty, story was weak, weapons few, upgrading them is alright doesn't really do much tho. The best part easily is the graphics but they take time to load which also sucks. This game should be more rpg focused and have a shiet of a lot more to the story, overall short game, just a run through you can beat in like 12 hours, all the side quests are kinda lame, game is the same thing over and over again, go in some place, infiltrate, retrieve something, come back, over and over and over again. I do not really advice anyone to rent it, so many better games out there worth playing

Rage-way too short

posted by Zombiekiller26 (MANTECA, CA) Oct 15, 2011

The game play is awesome!! the story so ok, but it is so short. I beat the game in less then 10 hours! There are a few side quest to do and some area to explore. The main problem is that i beat the main story before finishing the side quest thinking that once the main quest was over that i would have time to go back and play the parts i missed or explore the world better. To my surprise that is not what happen. I saved once I got to the last part, and i had just been using the same save file over and over again, which was a big mistake. This is a mistake because once you beat the main quest that is it you beat the game, the end. Which the end is horrible! Then the game rolls the credit and you can not go back. You can load your game again but like i said it loads at the point right when i got to the last part, and once you have started the last quest the racing and other side quest are no longer available. So, to play the parts that i missed i would have to replay the whole game over again, which to me would be pointless. It feels like they were going to make a great game and then half way through realized that they had ran out of time and had to end the game. The graphic are nothing like the trailers, they can get real rough it some area, and the racing part are a little weak. Over all something to rent and get a few fun hours out of. And make sure you save at ever point so you can go back and replay.

I'm glad I joined Gamefly

This game has stunning graphics but not much punch. I enjoyed the details in the landscape and camera work for the most part, however the game itself lacks depth of play.

Once you complete the game there is no real way of going back and finishing side missions. It could use a little more free roam abilities. I felt the end of the game was lacking in any real grand test of skill.

Need more freedom and "what if" situations.

I'm glad I joined Gamefly, because that would have been a real waste of some major coin.

this game had so much potential, but the game lasted me 8 hours of unsatified disappointment. Don't get me wrong the graphics were amazing and the shotter aspect was also very well put together but for an rpg shooter like this it was no where near where it could have been the story line was too weak.

Let Down

posted by Anonymous1255 (CLERMONT, FL) Oct 10, 2011

Apparently long development times and over hyping do not make a great game. (i.e. Duke Nukem) This is another such example using this tactic for promotion and sales. It's basically Fallout-Lite with Mad Max car battles set in yet another bland post-apocalyptic world. A world that might look nicer if it wasn't for severe texture loading issues that are probably the most annoying aspect of the game. The story is incredibly dull and the missions are all generic objectives we've seen countless times before. The characters are generic and unrelatable. The shooting game play is sort of fun and different in terms of a seemingly more intelligent and realistic AI, but the games boring pace and story put me to sleep and I couldn't justify slogging through another mediocre at best, over hyped title. ID should have stayed true to their FPS roots and not included Bethesda's forced and worn out RPG elements. 5/10

Good, but lacking

posted by GlassDarkly (DUBLIN, CA) Sep 13, 2012

I love ID software and there's a lot to admire in Rage. The driving segments are good and unusual for the genre. In fact, now when I play Fallout 3 I want something to cruise around in. The graphics and animation are top notch. But the gameplays just drags on, even though it's not a very long game. And the story is non-existent. That's really unforgivable. Rage is an example of tech over story and it really hurts it. The ending is one of the worst in memory.

Put it this way -- I'm playing through Fallout 3 again, but I'll never play Rage again. Some of it was fun, but without a narrative to draw me in, what's the point?

Kind of dissapointed by Bethesda Studios (Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer) on this one, it just doesn't have enough meat on it like the other games but is decent to play and about only 12 hours of gameplay...but it is kind of fun gameplay, worth a rent but don't buy.
