Groundbreaking?

This game, Rage, isn't groundbreaking. The plot isn't anything new. It feels a lot like fallout 3, and borderlands, which has been stated in other reviews, i'm sure.

At first, the game is appealing. Graphically, it's pretty. The guns are pretty cool, and feel somewhat powerful. But the plot, thus far, is shallow, and nothing new. I've played it for a couple of hours, and i've learned nothing about the character I am, where I came from, or what the heck happened in this game. Nor, do I care. This game hasn't done much to captivate me, and it may not do much for you.

In the short time playing, I've already experienced random glitches and bugs in the game; flying off the ATV, hitting invisible walls. Shooting enemies in the head behind their cover, and it not hitting them, kinda disappointing.

The lack of autosave just led me to shut my xbox off in sheer frustration. It's silly that the developers overlooks such small, common things in games such as this.

That being said, it is a little fun to play. I'm a very critical person with games, so keep that in mind as well. :)

Great game but the ending seemed rushed. If you took Borderlands and made it move at 60 frames per second, but make it one third as long, you'd have Rage.

The most next generation title of this generation

A preview of what is next, after the 360. Gorgeous visuals, blistering frame rate and incredible open game world, for your exploration. Truthfully, this game has spoiled me for anything after it. It is amazing what Bethesda and iD pulled off with this title. Basically take any great FPS, provide a quasi-open world environment and sprinkle it with a lot of fun stuff to do and that wraps up the review of this title.

Controls are easy and responsive, sound is as amazing as the visuals and the speed and fluidity at which everything moves is just jaw dropping. All of this and zero aliasing, even on my 121" projection screen.

Negatives, are few and far between. I guess the only thing that has really caught my attention is the lack of interactivity with a lot of items. You arent going to shoot a tire and watch it roll away, or see a box collapse convincingly... but it had to be a trade-off to get a game like this running at 60fps on the consoles. Also, the beginning missions and structure is somewhat limited and makes the game feel more linear than it actually is. But the beginning missions only serve as conditioning for what is to come, each opening another section of this huge, gorgeous world.

Positives... Pretty much everything else. There is always a ton of stuff to do. Item quests, search and destroy, racing, etc... You can even take on jobs to earn money... to buy weapons, upgrades and vehicles. Truthfully, seeing this game in motion will just floor you. There is nothing else like it on the consoles and even the PC. I had taken a break from gaming about 8 months ago and this was my first game back after it. I was convinced that gaming on the 360 had reached its peak and nothing else was going to amaze me. This title proved that there is a bit of life left in the system, when coding is in the hands of the right developer. Rent it, then keep it.... as I did. You wont regret it.

CONS:
- Story pigeon-holes what you do -- no freedom. Not to mention suddenly ends with absolutely no build-up
- Landscapes are nice but you cannot deviate from the paths in "dungeons" or even out in the world
- World attempts to feel big with huge backdrops but fails due to not allowing the player to explore outside of the very small boundaries (think of exploring in Fable)
- The game reuses dungeons and areas after you've initially completed them to artificially produce more content -- player has to revisit places for another quest.
- The vehicle controls, steering, and fragility are enjoyment-killers.
- Repeatedly jumping (and damaging) your vehicle to hit the drones for cheap building materials just isn't fun after doing it twice.

All-in-all, I am deeply disappointed with ID. This game felt like a cheap copy of very successful post-apocalyptic titles like Borderlands, and Fallout. Additionally, the game gives players zero replay value and has only a fraction of the content those other games offered; and doesn't do well the aspects of those games it copied (ex Borderlands' vehicles).

The unique concepts that the game does bring, are either overly complex or just too cumbersome for a player to use in fast-paced combat: ammo types, large selection of weapons but can only hot-key four, etc.

Recommendation here is simply to rent it, play it once, then send it back and wait for the next title. ID has taken its reputation and history and placed it on the line. And while the game looks great, gamers want to actually play meaningful content and not just look at pretty pictures. There's just very little creativity here from the shop that created the First Person Shooter genre.

I really wanted to love this game

This was a tough one to review. Graphics wise this game was beautiful, gorgeous enviroments,
(although the Apocalypse enviroments do get tired after a while) facial features, body movement all spot on. Id makes a beautiful game. The controls were tight and satisfying it responded beautifully to your inputs and the only reason you missed a target was because you spazed out. Missions were fun but it did get a little tiring that everyone wanted something from you. The missions themselves were varied enough that they were always fun to go through it was just the fact that you knew whoever you talked to would require you to do something.

It was a great game.

What brought it down was it was way to short. you have this beautiful world incredible gameplay such varied enemy AI so much potential and you were basically sidelined to the main missions. don't get me wrong you have several side missions but there were so many NPC's that never talked to you. The game felt rushed even though it had a 5 year development cycle. To me it feels like you got 1/2 the game and the rest of it will be available in DLC. I beat the game in 19 hours with doing all te side missions. A game of this size should definately be in the elder scrolls category in terms of length. I would have loved to spend more time cruising around the landscape finding the one lonely NPC that needed my help or roam around and find a clan of mutants that need killing or the authority harrasing a small encampment and I'm there to save the day but alas you were guided to finish the game to quickly. This game could have been the ultimate of games but I felt cheated. Also don't get me started on the ending. I finished the last mission waiting for the next one and the credits rolled. Really?! That was no ending.

So this was a solid game it was beautiful, the shooting mechanics were awesome it had so much potential but it squandered it on a short play through time. Give it a rent not a buy.

Fallout3 and Borderlands had a better-looking baby

If you played either game then the gameplay and themes will be very familiar to you. But Rage takes the best elements of both games, strips away the worst parts of each (tedious enemy/loot respawning and extremely repetetive questing for borderlands, ridiculous item micromanagement and glitchy questing for Fallout) and funnels what's left into a visually impressive game with a nice mixture of open world exploring, vehicle racing/combat, and the more traditional linear shooting galleries. What Rage does right, it does very right. Shooting and driving mechanics are excellent, and there's a nice mix of enemies, from the super fast but vulnerable mutants to the heavily armored Gearhead or Authority types. The environments are gorgeous (although as with every other ID game I've ever played, close-up textures look blocky and dated), and the area-specific damage on enemies helps ensure that no two death animations will end up being exactly the same. All the weapons are fun to use, but the coolest has to be the wingstick, a flying smart propellor of death that regularly decapitates unarmored enemies. Never got tired of using that one, great in mutant hordes.

It's just a shame that the game doesn't really do much else to break away from the aforementioned predecessors. It really is exactly like a symbiosis of those two games, but with a lot more polish. You got your end of the world scenario, your character stumbling out fo a vault into post- apocalyptia, your crazed mutants, your crazy raider/bandit types, and then the Authority, who are pretty much exaclty like the Enclave of Fallout 3. Then you have the Borderlands driving/jumping challenges, and the job board, but thankfully the enemies doen't constantly respawn every 5 minutes. But the whole thing will take you less than 20 hours, and the lack of any big boss finale was kind of a let down. Still, it was left wide open for a sequel - and I'd probably play it. So in conclusion, fun, though familiar, worth a rental.

Great game, lots of fun, one of the best looking games out there. The problem is that there are really just a few missions to the main campaign. What I thought would be about 25% of the game completed turned out to be the last mission and it ended! Lame.

I think this is a game made to show off the idTech 5 engine. And the new engine is impressive. However, as I was playing all I could think was "Ive done all this before". It seems like all of the original ideas for this game went in to the technology.

The story is barely present except to put you in the environment. From a plot stand point, it is just as empty as the wastelands you will roam through. Although to be fair, I did very little roaming as the game is very linear. I was also disappointed in most of the side jobs. What I was hoping would be new experiences ended up being fetch quests to places I had already been from main plot quests.

Racing is fun, I guess. I did not even bother with multiplayer, as racing just doesnt really appeal to me.

All in all, I am glad I played Rage. But I am thrilled I rented from Gamefly and did not purchase.

Plays the same but smoother and much, much better graphics. I understand the style they were going for, and it is cool for an hour or so then starts to be too cartoonish (Borderlands that is).
One thing that sucks about Rage is that you can loot the bodies but can't take their guns!? Weak!

I have to admit, this game was pretty addicting and fun. It had a lot of creative elements throughout the game. With that said, it also had a lot of flaws in it. I don't really feel like getting into all of them, but a major dissapointment was how short this game was. I beat this game in 20 hours, and thats with a lot of screwing around with the side games and exploring. When the game came to an end, i have to say that i felt cheated

It was a fairly good looking game had the grit of a post apocalyptic future. Started out very strong and got progressively weaker like the game started getting short on the deadline. The weapons were fun and imaginative but there's no upgrading your weapons and you get the best one only on the very last mission. Enemies were repetitive with an average ai. The game's story felt flimsy and broken into pieces and littered with seemingly pointless racing and mini games. The "multiplayer" isn't at all what you'd expect but more like a co-op. Over all the game looked great with fantastic weapons and it seemed to try to tackle to many genres at once. It felt there was little production time, showing with the redundant enemies that eventually got stale and the lack of character. If your a fan of post apocalyptic mutants exploding this game is all you. I give it a 6 out of 10.

I normally don't write reviews but this game earned it!
I've been gaming since pong and have seen all the great changes in the gaming experience. Rage brings back fond memories of hours on hours of gaming fun, let me tell you Rage has set the stage for what I see as bringing it back to what gaming is all about. None of this 36 hours and done that they've put out(some are great games but to short). In short I love this game!
Thanks guys for returning to your roots since the original DOOM, gamers needed you and you answered. Peace BhIma Dev

Great game overall, game play is on point, the graphics are awesome and pretty much you are driving around the map doing others ppls orders, the story mode is short. The game is goood for a rpg....but reminds me of twisted metal, fallout, i thought the wait of the game coming out which took five years to make. But overall good game only a rental.

Rage is a unique vision into a lawless world after a metor destroy life is we know. What emerge is a broken world filled with mutants, thugs and criminal's that run small towns. The world was beautiful done with great detail to it's surounding. The reactions you get from interacting with people as well as enemey is incredibility real. People in town tell you what is on there mind and when battling the enemey they run for cover and react to being injured. I would give Rage a 10 out of 10 BUT the game is too short. There are three disks for this game, 2 are for the campaign and the last is for multi-player. Each disk is a section of the wasteland and each wasteland have at least one big town and some settlements. By talking to people you can help them, which in turn can sometimes help you, by completing mission. These mission usually involve retrieving some object protected by tons of unfriendly people or mutants. The problem is there are not many for these side quest and the main mission is pretty straight forward. I felt if i had to download two disk to my harddrive it could have been long play time.

Here's the problem I had with this game... Just when it get's really good and you feel like the baddest dude in the wasteland, IT ENDS! For 6 years in devlopment the game is really short. Fun, good shooter but if you are thinking this is a 30 plus hour Fallout type you are wrong. There is way less to do than you would imagine and the racing only mildly entertaining.

Rage was very close to being a perfect game, but with a few flaws it just fell short. Lets start with the good: the graphics were exelent, the sound quality was great, along with great voice acting, and the gameplay was amazing. Now for the bad, for it being a 3 disk game I was expecting a long, and awesome storyline, and well more of a multiplayer, but what you get is a storyline that falls short of being epic, and two types of multiplayer, on being a few missions similar to the actual story missions, and a racing multiplayer. The storyline I felt was a tad confusing, because it seemed to make references to Brink which I did not play, but it was still enjoyable. And well, the ending of the game, was nothing short of disapointing, but atleast it left it open for a second game which I will gladly play. In closing this game is a for sure rent, and one I will remember for a long time.

ID has created possibly the best engine I have experienced. The fluidity of the motion on the 360 was incredible, and the character movements were astounding. Graphically, I have never seen a better game.

The game play was very good. Lots of varied weapons and ammo choices, and the mini-games/missions were fun. That said, I felt the game was limited as some of the missions were repetitive, and the final mission was easy and didn't offer a huge climax. Also, for a "choose your path" game, I wish it would have allowed me to go back to complete the other missions after so I could see what the towns were like. But, I guess that would ruin Rage 2.

Haven't done coop or multi yet, but even without those two modes, this game is a clean 9.

Let's just call this Borderlands without the cool cel shaded personality or exciting loot drops. The graphics were nice, but in all honesty, the story was bland. The characters did nothing meaningful. The driving was interesting for about five minutes, then I got dragged into a driving minigame to advance the "story." Where's my visceral shooting action?

I know people who were excited to play this. I was excited to get it in the mail. I am now excited to get something else, as this was boring boring boring.

Sorry id... try again.
