Quake 4 adds more of a single player storyline but the gameplay is par for the course as far as Quake games go.
Technically solid, sci-fi first person fragfest but nothing new or ground breaking. The boss fights seem uninspired and the more difficult areas are cleared with the typical twitch response- strafe, hop and shoot everything that moves and stay alive long enough to get to the next health pack or ammo resupply point.
The atmosphere is very Doom 3-like and the levels practically interchangeable minus the Strogg storyline. Squad interaction pretty much amounts to keeping the Tech and Medic alive as long as you can so they're around to repair your armor and administer a med pack. Although you do feel a sense of comraderie with your Rhino squadmates and the fates that befall them.
The vehicle elements are a useful diversion to the run and gun play but seem more of an afterthought than anything.
On the plus side, fans of multiplayer will find the fragging as intense as ever. :)
Overall, it's a worthwhile experience for id fans and fans of the series but personally, it's just another face in the first-person shooter crowd while we wait for the true next gen FPS like Gears of War, Prey and of course, Halo 3.
all I can say is "Meh". ID games seems content to rest on their laurels and release the same old game with slightly better graphics. I enjoyed Doom 3 on the xbox a lot more than I did this game. The graphics were almost as good, the frame rate was nowhere near as sluggish, and the game's atmosphere was much more immersive. This is just and endless series of running around through metallic hallways shooting everything that moves, and it gets kind of boring. Also, I was excited at first when I hear you get to pilot vehicles like mechs and hovertanks - well guess what, you only get to use each of those vehicles once, in a couple of short levels.
Quake 4 is a passable shooter, but far below next gen standards. Rent Call of Duty 2, GRAW, or even dust off Halo 2 instead.
After the first 5 min. of the game, well it kinda kept repeating itself. I tried to go through the whole game but was impossible to do because I got so bored. Oh, and the frame rate sucks too, you notice it more when you look around pretty quick.
