Fair

Lost Interest

I was completely addicted to Puzzle Quest for the Wii. When I heard this game was coming out, I thought I'd be just as happy with it, but it just didn't hold my interest. The storyline was very slow paced, the characters weren't very likable, and frankly I was just at a loss of what to do at some points.

As with the Wii version, the gameplay was incredibly easy until certain points in the game where you suddenly came across an almost impossible to pass task. This makes for aggravation rather than fun strategizing.

There is no choice on what type of character you want to be to have different strengths. I thought this was a loss. The gameplay style is different in this game, and it's much harder to actually plan your strategy. I felt more like I was hoping to luckily have the pieces fall into line rather than planning a strategy.

Overall, this game just failed to capture my attention, unlike it's predecessor. I kept it around to give it more chances, but I finally returned it to Gamefly just because it was collecting dust more than anything.

Horrible

Technical Errors Ruin Experience

First off, I really like Puzzle Quest as a puzzle game. I own it on the PC and enjoy playing it there, and while the extreme cutbacks in graphics, presentation, and even gameplay on the DS port were disappointing, they were not entirely unexpected. The DS is not very powerful, after all.

What earns this review a 1 is the horrible use of the touch screen. Wherever you touch is completely off. Occasionally if you do not hit exactly the right pixel when moving gems (or navigating the map, or choosing from a menu), the game will act as if you clicked a portion far off beyond the edge of the screen. Gems nowhere near your stylus will flip, and on the navigation screens your ship will fly off on its own towards the border of the screen.

If it were only on menus it would not be a dealbreaker, but with the majority of the early game consisting of a horrible mini-game called Hacking LeapGates, the seconds taken to flip non-matching tiles back and forth (tiles you did NOT select) will cost you the game more often than not. Then you must start over, and the minigame is hard enough on its own when everything is working correctly.

I can not imagine that this game received even an hour's worth of quality assurance on the DS port. They left horrible technical errors that make the game far more frustrating than it's worth. If you want to play it, try it on a different system, like PC or buy it from XBox Live.

Don't even rent it for the DS. You will regret it.

Bad

Disappointing

I am very disappoint about this sequel, I enjoyed the first puzzle quest a lot and played it all the way through, this one is just long and tedious.

The controls seem sluggish and very unresponsive, the main ship controls are way too sensitive and the first time I started it up I had problems selecting a menu. The games story proceed at a snails pace and the side quest seem unmotivated and nondescript.

The killer for me were the "Hack Jumpgate" games, these are timed and a prespecified series of gems has to be matched within the given time. Due to the randomness of the gems showing up and the gems that you need to match, success is more a matter of chance than of skillful play. And the different difficulty levels don't seem more or less difficult, just longer.

Stay away unless you want to try your patience.
