Difficult Just Isn't Enough...

This game is unforgiving. That needs to be put out there right now. It will have you trying the same part over and over again, failing miserably over and over and make you want to light your PSP on fire and ritualistically sacrifice it. You know your in for a ride what your playing as a series' token weakling with a thousand lives right from the start. The worst part is that I can't hate this game. As angry as I get, I always find myself still trying with the "I've gotten this far..." mentality.
However, there are some points that I'm severely disappointed in. The team over at NIS were always skilled at making games known for their finesse. The Disgaea series always had a level of difficulty, but in terms of the style you could kill with, it was unrivaled. Geo-Panels, Lifting, Throwing and Stacking; these elements set the game apart as a unique experience. This game seems to lack that.
For example, there is on enemy specifically, a small spiked ball that rolls down hills when you hit it. After it stops, it'll stand up and slowly move towards you. Here I was, expecting this enemy to be able to harm other enemies, as the level was set up with the ball at the top of a slant with a swarm approaching from below. So, I hit the ball, keep behind it and it decides to not hurt the enemies, they charge right through and proceed to rearrange my face with various weapons. It was infuriating.
Then come the Bombs, a signature weapon for the Prinny. When I saw bombs aligned with explosive barrels, I grew ecstatic. A chance to set traps and lure my enemies in. But no. The bombs have a minuscule explosion radius and the barrels don't make it any larger. In short, one of the Prinnies most memorable weapons is rendered utterly useless, aside from a few key and very rare moments.
I'm a giant Disgaea fan, so I love this game despite it's flaws. Still, I can't help but be disappointed with all of this. I won't give it a low score though, because I know it's still enjoyable to some.
