I think that the IGN review sums it up best. "Portal 2 makes the original look like the prototype that it is." We all remember how hilarious, outrageous, mind-bending, and awesome the original portal was, so take that and multiply it by, say.... four hundred.
Take incredible characters, an entertaining, well thought out, story, mind-bending puzzles, awesome new tools, and incredibly funny dialogue and you have portal 2. I do believe that the game slows a little in chapter 6 (of 9), the entire game is incredibly fun and really perplexing. It took me about 7 hours to beat, though I'm sure people's play times will differ.
The real light here is the co-op. This is no standard co-operative gameplay. One person can't sit in the corner while the other does all the work, both players mus co-operate to succeed. And trust me when I say that co-operation is absolutely vital to solving some of these incredibly difficult challenges. Me and my friend found ourselves stuck numerous times, and while it is frustrating, the point where we finally figured everything out was just pure euphoria. It is one of the few times I get to feel smart. All in all I'd say the co-op would last about 4-5 hours.
Valve is continuing to pump out games using their source engine, and I gotta say, it still looks good. But compared to other titles it just doesn't match up anymore. Some of the areas are breathtaking and some of them just invoke a feeling of "wow, thats awesome" inside of you, but it all ends up looking the same by the end. Don't get me wrong, the game looks good, but the engine is in need of some updates.
Story: 9/10 Gameplay: 10/10 Graphics: 8/10 Lasting appeal: 8/10 This game is worth everybody's attention. Get it immediately.
The polish is there on this title. It was worth the wait. After beating this game with no help from the internet, I feel as proud of this accomplishment as I was when I received my Master's degree. I probably used my brain more playing this game anyway.
It's funny, scary, sentimental, and makes you think about the nature of man. I demand a sequel.
