I own this game and have beat it more than once. I still pull it out every now and then and enjoy it. I decided to see what others were saying about it and was amazed that so many said it was bad. I do not think they realize just how realistic the ship to ship combat in this game is. Strategy is very important, and being able to adapt your strategy to the changing situation is crucial. Obviously these other reviewers do not understand you have to choose your battles carefully and work your way up the food chain.
Before combat starts, you should try to get yourself in a good strategic position. The first few precious moments of the battle are the difference between victory and feeding the fish. Knowing the difference between a fighting ship and a cargo ship is also very important. A person on a fast ship can take out a much larger ship if it has long range guns installed and stays out of range of the larger one. It also gives the opportunity to run if need be. Don't get me wrong, a battleship may be slow but can really put the hurting to anyone who messes with you if properly maneuvered.
Another important aspect is crew officers. Training different skills to different members will keep you alive. Keep them specialized and don't take the officers you are training to a sword fight. Do everything you can to keep them alive. Also, don't underestimate the cash to be had from running cargo for merchants. With enough cargo space at your disposal, you can make some serious cash. It is also much safer than smuggling.
The rest you will have to learn on your own. Study up and you can become a Terror of the Seas or a Hero. The choice is yours. To say anything more would give away spoilers. If it was not for a some glitches, I would give this game a higher rating. Unfortunately, the merchants sometimes like to send you to the wrong town with cargo. Also there is a black corvette that seems to induce glitches after you fight it. If you see it, reload to the last save.
