I'm stuck on the Flying dutchman level, post help.

I beat the fist task of beating the hammer head dude. then it says to use mast and someting to get to the other ship. I have pressed x, L1 and jumped on everything and nothing does anything.
please post reply to beating this. I have posted on PS underground and nobody answers me. there are no faqs or walkthroughs anywhere. Please help me!
