Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is not by any means a bad game. The controls are responsive and the 3D engine looks sharp, with characters that reasonably resemble their film counterparts. The music is fittingly upbeat and piratey feeling, with character sound-bites that are oft repeated, but crisp and clearly understandable. The game's main failing is uninspired level design and some counter-intuitive touch-screen functions. The basic formula for this game is 2 platforming levels followed by a character duel, rinse and repeat. This wouldn't be a bad thing except for the fact the platforming levels themselves are thoroughly run-of-the-mill and usually simple A to B courses with little by way of exploration or alternate routes. There are a smattering of items and powerups to collect on each level, but these are generally laid out right on the main path, requiring zero effort or skill to find. This game doesn't seem to know who it's target audience is; for all the simplistic one-way level design and impossible to miss treasure chests, the battle system and character duels are surprisingly difficult. With the addition of timed challenges (ie. light all the torches before your stick burns out) that require quick, precise, and often frustrating platform jumping to accomplish, the game is not one that most younger movie fans will be able enjoy on their own without plenty or help from a nimble-fingered adult. Still, if you're a Pirates fan who doesn't mind storytelling via bizarre dialogue and some asinine mission objectives, the dueling system is surprisingly deep and there are several fun minigames including a version of "Liar's Dice" straight from the film series.
