I've heard that the Phantasy Star (PS) series was much like the Monster Hunter (MH) series. Being a huge fan in MH I decided to give this a go. I played PS:portable (PS:P) as my first PS ever and I have to say it is nothing like MH, but this is not a bad thing at all. PS is a totally different game and a very good one at that.

PS:P is a basically a dungeon crawler in which you take NPC (There is no infrastucture either, just ad-hoc, which is a real bummer) as team members to complete missions. Kill enemies, get xp, grab loot, level up... rinse repeat.

There are 4 races (Human, Newman, CAST and Beast) and 3 base classes (Hunter aka Melee, Ranger aka well ranger, lol and Force aka caster). After a some point in the main story you can choose to change your class for some "prestige" classes or just change your base class.

I'm really enjoying PS:P and I would really recommend it to any action/RPG fan. It is truly a great game and with some amazing length and replay value.

This is a very fun RPG. If you have played and enjoyed any of the phantasy star games ( dreamcast, gamecube, ps2, xbox, xbox 360, or pc ) then you will enjoy this.

There are a lot of missions. There are a lot of rare items. There is a fun story mode and then "free" missions that you can play. The more you progress in story mode, the more items, weapons, armor, clothing, missions, and other goodies are unlocked.

There is no synthesis in this game like there is with phantasy star universe ( on which this game is based ). But that is a good thing for this version. It allows you the ability to find the rare weapons and armor rather than spending forever looking for synthesis items and a chance to fail.

The game encourages you to try all the different classes and jobs. Several skills and weapons unlock only after reaching a certain class or job type. I enjoy this. It means I am not always finding the same things and it really encourages me to try other weapons and classes and skills that I normally wouldn't have.

You can also play "online". You can solo play online or you can use some of your partner cards. If you have friends you can have them come over and all play together. You are limited to having to be in the same area as the people you want to play online with. But there is a way to play online with people all over the world. But for that you need a playstation 3. You can go to psoworld website and go to the phantasy star portable forum area for info on how to do that.

To recap, the game is long and enjoyable. There are a lot of things to find and to do. You won't be easily bored.

Happy gaming!

To think i almost wrote this game off. After the debacle that was Phantasy Star Universe anyone who held Phantasy Star Online in there hearts as a gem should have.

PS:P takes things back to the old ways. Its a good thing. The loot is good and no need to assemble it.Items are upgraded by grinders as it was in PSO.

The only bad thing is the lack of online. This can be worked arond via Xlink kai and PS3's adhoc party.

Rent it now peeps
