Excellent

Beautiful, difficult, and very engaging.

Let's separate this review a bit.
1. Gameplay: 9/10.

The largest problem with the gameplay happens to be the camera, for the most part. At times, I found myself wondering where the enemy I was trying to slash down was. Nevertheless, with some gameplay experience, you can easily get past this, because you'll eventually get to the point where you subconsciously follow the enemies' movements, and you know one of them is behind you, so you just slash it and then go back to what's in front of you, without having to bother with the camera. Other than that, the gameplay is wonderful, and satisfying. It's easy to get into this game, and get used to the controls, but it's hard to master them. As simplistic as the formula seems, it works. Destroy stuff, using spells, swords, large swords, staffs, sticks, spells, etc. to kill everything in sight is quite satisfying. However, there's another somewhat large flaw in the way that works. The levels are often short, fun, and memorable (even if you use one 50 times over to level up). However, some levels are disproportionately challenging to other levels, which makes one level seem extremely difficult, while the next is ridiculously easy. This can make it frustrating to replay some levels. I usually like very easy games, so it's strange that I loved playing through this one. That should tell you something.

2. Graphics: 10/10.

For an Xbox game, it's simply AMAZING. Enough said.

3. Sound: 9/10.

The oriental-ish music is nice, but... it can get pretty annoying. Maybe it's just because I normally prefer hard rock. However, I don't even tire of it. I suppose that says something about how well they selected the sounds. The English voice acting is also awesome.

4. Replayability: 10/10.

Some levels are just plain fun to keep doing, no matter how many times you've done them. It's easy to pick this game up several times after beating it.

Japanese Mythology and Action Gaming Collide

Otogi allows players a free roaming, action game that rarely is seen by other games. The graphics and art in the characters and enemies place you in ancient japan fighting creatures of the lands mythology. The character Raikoh starts the game with enough power and force to make you feel invincible, while still being vulnerable enough to challenge you.

While possessing visually stunning looks and lots of various game play with different weapons, spells and ability to challenge stages repeatedly, the game still has a few hang ups. Almost half the stages of the game are reworked versions of the first several stages, but with added enemies and challenges. Also the game is hard... very hard. Initially the player is met with challenges in just maintaining your character, with a constantly draining magic and life bar. Also some of the bosses are near god-like, forcing you to come up with strategies to deal with each (some being "run away"). However a victory over said challenges leave the player feeling very accomplished.

While the challenge in this game is high, and the story can be confusing to those not already familiar with japanese mythology, it's still a very enjoyable experience that should be given a chance by any gamer still looking to play this rare gem.

DOES NOT WORK ON XBOX 360

I'm not giving this game a score nor am I giving it a critique; it DOES NOT WORK on the Xbox 360. It is not backwards compatible.

This is for anyone who stumbles across it and goes, "Y'know, this game looks great, but I only have a 360."
