Otogi 2 is a difficult game to review. While I enjoyed the gameplay, characters, storyline, graphics and most everything about the way the game was structured and executed, the levels themselves can be frustrating, overly difficult and at times mystifying as I had no clue why I kept failing missions. First, the good stuff. Based off of Japanese mythology, you play six different fabled warriors tasked with defeating the Nine Tailed Fox and a lot of angry spirits and demons along the way. The destructive environments, settings and mid-air combat make the game stand out from other fighting games. The characters themselves are really cool. How can you not like a girl with a giant scythe, a wolf with a bladed staff and a tree trunk that uses a ship's wheel as a weapon? I ask you. The game even throws in accessories, magic, unlockable weapons, stat upgrades and many extra challenges. However, the game grinds to a halt the moment you reach that one level where you have no idea what to do and the game goes from fun to frustrating. You'll come to a sudden stop just because you ran out of mana and your health bar starts depleting or you ran on water just a little too long or a giant spider keeps ramming into you until you die. Then the game becomes a chore and thus not much fun at all. There are no mid-level saves, which would have been nice even though they are short. For those willing to stick it out this game has replay value by the ton and a suitably lengthy set of missions to complete. But if you're like me, once you start hitting brick walls, you'll be ready to move on to something else.
I did not actually get to play this game because it has not yet been re-coded to play on the Xbox 360- yet. I didnt feel like taking the time and effort to drag out my old Xbox to play it on, so I just sent it back. There is a page on the official Xbox website that lists all of the original Xbox titles you can currently play on your 360, and is constantly being updated with new (old) games that will play. Something to keep in mind!
The good : There are multiple characters to choose from. They all have their own separate attacks. Good for a first time gamer. Simple gameplay. Almost everything is destroyable. Female lead character that doesn't suck/look like a skank!!! And she totally kicks A! Go Seimei!! And props to Raikoh.
The bad: It may be a little too simple for the hardcore gamer.
The ugly: some of the characters are ugly...lol but I still think they're cool.
overall: Otogi 2 rocks!!! It's at least way better than Tao Feng so yeah...
